Wanna buy my first 4runner soon but while watching some YouTube videos I figured the subwoofer in the cargo area is sometimes on the left side and sometimes on the right side. Does anyone know why this happens? Thanks!

from your pics the top one has a sub, the bottom one you cant tell since you dont show the whole right side.

the left side panel is where the battery is located on hybrids i think

also if you have an onboard compressor, the right wheel hump has a cutoff for it and the sub is always located on the right side behind the speaker grille

here is a better breakout of the cargo area configurations you can have in the 4R in pics

the sub will always be on the passenger side no matter what. the grille will always be there, but it may not be filled in by a sub unless you have the jbl systems installed (i think)

1st pic shows the hybrid, the left side cubby hole holds the wheel jack (and/or 12v battery) and the grille on the right
2nd pic shows non hybrid but the cubby hole has moved to the floor panel but grille on the right
3rd pic shows the on board air compressor installed but also the grille is on the right

The top section of the third pictures comes off and you should see the wiring connection for the air compressor. You likely need to cut an opening for the air compressor as i don’t see how you would replace that entire piece.

There’s a recent video here of someone installing an ARB air compressor under the hood and he shows how to remove the top piece and points out the electrical connection.

My SR5 with no jbl no sub came with no grill. There is an open cubby with no cover or door.

But it's basically useless just like the arm rest trays with no kind of door or cover to hold stuff in place.

That air pump in the tray doesn't weigh much and has a velcro strap around the handle into the weird fence thing. It's 12v cigarrette cord is trapped between it and the wall. And the first aid kit is both soft and weightless so it doesn't mater if it hops out.

I mean to make some kind of door for the speaker cavity because there is a lip all around the opening that something can grab on to. Especially on the bottom left & right corners the opening has a more rounded corner than the cavity behind it, making a big triangular lip in the corners that something could slot onto real securely. That lip in the bottom corners is basically what's keeping the first aid kit in there.
