We took the plunge and picked up a small squaredrop camper. Initially, I'm setting up my 2024 TRP ORP to tow it and installing the DC to DC charger is pretty straightforward. Basically, just an ignition switched charging circuit from the vehicle battery to the camper battery system to charge up the camper batteries when under tow. Essentially, using the vehicle alternator to charge both vehicles.

The rub is my 2025 TRD OR Hybrid... which doesn't have an alternator. Has anyone set up a DC to DC charger off the 12V battery in the back that gets charged from the vehicles own DC to DC charger from the higher voltage hybrid battery?

I believe there are mentions on the forum that the hybrid with aux switch package also adds an alternator, if you have that.

I don't have the aux switch package with the alternator... that'd have made life easier.

I have a DC to DC charger from my Tundra that I am planning on wiring directly to the 12V battery, same as it was on my Tundra. I expect it to work the same in my OR hybrid. Do you know of a reason why it wouldn't?

I'm just wondering if I connect a mostly dead camper to the vehicle 12V that I'll overload the vehicle's convertor. The converter from the hybrid battery definitely has an upper limit on what it'll handle- but that's a little bit of a mystery. The alternator is meant to run an entire vehicle, in the hybrid the converter basically runs just the radio and computers. The models with the Aux switches gets an alternator to run the higher loads.

You could just use a 120V 12V charger and use the 2400W outlets in your 4Runner. The only downside (maybe, although maybe not a problem) is that it is only active when the hybrid system is operating (that is, engine on so it can start/stop as needed).
