Hi, I am a new 4runner TRD ORP owner and want to wire my 4runner to be able to charge my trailer batteries while driving via a Victron DC/DC charger. My previous tow vehicle was set up for the charging and it worked fine. Has anyone wired their 4runner to do this? I am assuming the alternator is big enough to handle the charging (I hope).

You ever find out the power output? Or did your victron work? I’m looking at installing an Orion xs to charge my camper if I’m several days with little sun

I talked to the Toyota dealer and they were not particularly helpful. They said the alternator would probably be OK. I got this answer second hand from the service advisor and he did not know the alternator size or output requirements. He gave me a referral to a truck accessory outfit that he was sure would know the answer. They didn't have a clue. So at this point, I am going to hold off until I find a better answer. I don't want to screw up any of the electronics on the truck (or void a warranty).

Have you looked at the new victron xs? It watches voltage drop then limits feeding the charge. It’s designed to work with the whatever the alternator can give.

If I find anything more I’ll try to remember to post

I have the victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12 - 30 non isolated DC/DC charger installed in my trailer. It is also supposed to manage voltage. I am just a bit anxious about messing up my expensive ORP 4runner! One would think that Toyota would put a large enough alternator to handle this simple task. There are plenty of youtube videos about people messing up their vehicles with DC/DC charging..... I should point out that I did wire my 2016 Toyota Highlander and everything worked fine with the charger.

We've had great luck with RedArc BCDC's. It would be a piece of cake to run the wires back to an anderson plug that can branch back to the camper. The BCDC's isolate, and have solar input as well. It's a great setup, and small.
