Upgrading the wheels on your 6th generation Toyota 4Runner is one of the most exciting ways to transform both its performance and style. Whether you’re chasing rugged off-road capability, a sleek street presence, or a blend of both, the right set of wheels can redefine your driving experience.

The 6th gen 4Runner brings new fitment standards and a fresh wave of aftermarket options, making it the perfect time to explore what’s possible for your rig. Let’s dive into the world of 6th gen 4Runner wheels, spotlighting top brands, fitment tips, and some standout products available at OffRoadUSA.

Why Upgrade Your 6th Gen 4Runner Wheels?

Swapping out your stock wheels for aftermarket options unlocks a host of benefits. Modern 4Runner owners are looking for more than just a fresh look—they want wheels that can handle tough trails, improve handling, and let them run bigger, more aggressive tires.

Upgraded wheels can also reduce unsprung weight, which translates to better fuel efficiency, quicker acceleration, and improved ride comfort. Plus, the right wheels can give your 4Runner a bold, head-turning stance that sets it apart from the crowd.

6th Gen 4Runner Wheel Fitment: What’s New?

The 6th generation 4Runner introduces a few key changes that affect wheel compatibility:
  • Bolt Pattern: 6x139.7mm (same as previous generations)
  • Wheel Nut Thread: M14x1.5 (upgraded from M12)
  • Center Bore: 95.1mm (smaller than previous gens)
  • Torque Specs: 96 ft/lbs for alloy wheels
These changes mean that wheels designed for older 4Runners may not fit without modification. Most reputable wheel manufacturers now offer wheels specifically drilled for the 6th gen’s M14 nuts and smaller center bore. If you’re considering older wheels, make sure they can be drilled to fit or opt for a hubcentric ring to ensure a smooth, vibration-free ride.

Choosing the Right Wheel Size and Offset

Wheel size and offset play a crucial role in how your 4Runner handles, looks, and performs. Here’s a breakdown of the most common sizes and offsets for the 6th gen:
  • 17-Inch Wheels: Best for off-roading, offering more sidewall flex for better traction on trails. Common fitments include 17x8, 17x8.5, and 17x9. These wheels work well with tires like 265/70R17, 285/70R17, and even 35s with modifications.
  • 18-Inch Wheels: A balanced choice for those who want a mix of aesthetics and off-road performance. Common fitments include 18x8, 18x8.5, and 18x9. These wheels pair well with tires like 265/70R18 and 285/70R18.
  • 20-Inch Wheels: Ideal for those who want a bold, street-oriented look. Common fitments include 20x8 and 20x9. These wheels work best with tires like 265/55R20 and 285/55R20.
Offset is another critical factor. Positive offset keeps the wheels tucked under the fenders, while negative offset creates a more aggressive stance with wheels sticking out past the fenders. For the 6th gen, offsets around +40 to +45 are recommended for a balanced look and maximum clearance.

Nodak,

How do you like the wheel and tire size on the platinum? Assuming you keep the wheel, will you move to a 275-65 tire size? What is your preference for tire replacement when the time comes?

Got a 6G4R noob question:

I’m coming from the Gen 3 Taco where the bolt pattern is the same, but the center bore diameter is bigger (106.1 mm on the Gen 3 Taco vs 95.1 mm on the 6G4R). It looks like most wheel manufacturers are still going with the larger 106.1 mm center bore.

So are people using rings (or some sort of adapter) to make up the difference in center bore diameter? Are the rings something we have to order separately or do they come with the wheels if we specify that they are going on a 2025+ 6G4R?

For example, if ordering direct from Method or ordering from Tire Rack?

And I guess the same will apply to the larger wheel nut thread now needed on the 6G4R.

Thanks!

Depends on the company you’re buying from. Most will ship rings with the rims if they know what model vehicle it’s going on. Just ask the distributor if they include them when purchasing.

you can put a larger bore size on a smaller hub with concentric ring adapter. just make sure they send the correct ring adapter. on our 23 tundra, they sent the wrong size initially and the tire place had to call them to send the correct size the 2nd time, so we had to wait another week to get the wheels and tires mounted.

you CANNOT put a smaller hub size on a bigger hub

the gloss black initially i hated the look when looking at pics and brochures, but in person it took a few weeks and now they dont bother me.

tires i will probably keep the oem size, but if i do go with a different size i will uses tiresize/com to compare the +/- speedometer reading with a different size

it also depends on the cost differential going +1 or +2 size up from oem

sometimes you can plus up a tire size and get it cheaper than oem. that what happened on my 2014 4R. going up +1 size tire actually cost me $20 cheaper per tire than sticking with the oem size.
