Thoughts on 26570 18 studded tires . Any competition for the Nokian Lt3? Live in the mountains and do not drive a ton but always on winding mountain roads when I do.

it depends on the environment you will encounter. if you have to deal with ice and compacted snow most of the time studded works.

but it you are dealing with powdered or soft snow, tread pattern will matter more than the studs. without something hard to bite into, the studs are useless

a good dedicated snow tire for soft snow will be better if that is all you deal with mostly.

personally in the last 40 yrs in ND dealing with all conditions, i have yet to use a studded tire. just not enough times i am on ice or compacted snow to benefit from them to run them all winter.

good tread tires work for 80% of the conditions i have to deal with, maybe out of the remaining i might deal with ice 5-10%

I ran Hakka LT3 (non studded) on my Tacoma for a number of winters and they were fantastic. Last winter we had a lot more ice and they still did a great job, but being 5 years old I’m changing to Nokian studded just to give them a try. Canadian winters and I live in a town with a lot of hills so we will see how they do.

like Nodak said, it can be a seasonal problem, I’m running Outpost nAT till I get my winters and for the first couple wet snows this year they are awesome. It’s been unusually warm this fall but winter is on the way.

unstudded Hakkapeliitta LT3 are the only thing we kept on my crew fleet of Sprinter vans in Maine in winter. downtime when stuck in a ditch ain't making anyone happy. They don't get stuck. any they can creep slow on ice and do ok there as well. I have considered studded for hilly back roads and ice, but those icy days I just don't run 'em to jobsites.

studded LT3 will be essentially unstoppable and yeah among the very best possible tire for winter where studs are allowed and you don't mind the noise on pavement

I ran studded Hakka LT3’s on my stock Jeep Rubicon for 5 winters before I traded it this year for my 4Runner. The Hakkas were quite awesome as dedicated winter tires here in New England. One winter I driving from MA to upstate NY and was hit with a heavy blizzard midway (blinding snow, heavy winds). Cars and truck tractor semi’s were literally sliding off the road EVERYWHERE. As I drove, I kept my Rubicon at around 55mph (part-time 4wd) and arrived safely at my destination. It was a bit white knuckled for a 5-hour drive, but the Hakkas did their job.
I’ll surely be getting a set with dedicated wheels for my 4Runner for winters.

If I had to come up with a “negative” for the tires, it would be that they were a bit “mushy” in deep slushy snow.
