I don't think it has anything to do with being manufactured in Japan at all. It's about the regulations in the US when it comes to paint and ingredients. Unfortunate, but then way it is. I went ahead and did a full Xpel Stealth PPF to give me the peace of mind. It looks pretty bad ass as well!
it’s painted in Japan not the US. There are no EPA paint regulations affecting it as it is not painted here.

That is true, until it is imported and sold in the US, then it must comply with US regulations, including the EPA and state regulations, namely California.

That sucks. I thought these trucks being made in Japan meant better quality?
mechanically superior,
put together better, with a better assembled engine and transmission.

zero VOC paint is zero VOC paint no matter where it's applied

Why don't other mfgs who import to the US have these paint issues? The paint on 4Runners is notorious for being extremely poor quality - both in thickness and in resilience.
And why would the paint on my 13 yr old Jeep Wrangler look better than a brand new 4Runner? I am not kidding. It is made here in the US. (yeah the reilaibility was awful but we are talking about paint).

Ahhh, a lot of them do for sure and yes, it's pretty bad with the 4 Runners. Every manufacturer has to abide by the same rules, but each have different ways they apply the paint, etc. Fortunately, your 13 year old Jeep has more of the good VOCs and others things that make the paint more durable and last longer!

Don't get me wrong- two left cylinder failures in 105k miles is why the Jeep's going! But at least it had great paint!
