I agree you have to have spare at least the same diameter. If you can't deal with a 33" then you are going off of stock specks and then getting cheap by thinking a tiny diameter spare is smart. Its not, do it right or don't do it at all. A full sized matching spare is what I use same rim, etc. So I can drive 500 miles full speed if I need. Not doing that crazy 45 mph praying I don't smoke my diffs etc.
Match all 5 tires and use a swing gate if you must go past 33" don't get stupid.

I have 285/75/17 AT3’s on my TH. Specs for this tire are 33.9 x 11.3. They fit the spare space at 40 psi - it’s tight, but it fits.

Did you also modify the suspension to stop the scrubbing from the over sized tire?

What percent of driving do you do on pavement vs off road? Mostly pavement driving? I'm just curious, I started off roading the past but now im 90 percent on paved so I don't bother with over sized tires. Did you have to adjust the speedometer, it will be off.

All good points and the majority of my driving is pavement as well. We do get off road as much as we can given our work schedules - the beach in Corpus, Ruidoso, Hidden Falls, etc. Heading to Big Bend in May and CO this fall. Initial goal was just replacing stock SL tire but selection in stock 18” rims meant E loads or much heavier tires. I didn’t want to go to a 35” tire because “fitting” it and actually using it off road are two different things. So long story short the 285/75/17 AT3 was a good compromise. More rubber with the 75, tucks nicely when articulated, not excessively heavy, AT3 performs well on and off road.

As for modifications, I was rubbing on the stock 265/70/18 especially in front at full lock/articulation off road. I tucked the liner and did the crash bracket delete before I even changed tires. With the tire/rim change I put a preload collar on and have had no issues with rubbing/scrubbing. Suspension (OME) performs just as well as before the collar and all systems work fine.

Speedometer and Odometer are impacted as you pointed out. I subtract a couple MPH driving through areas of concern.

Sounds like you know what you are doing. Yea definitely have to weigh the pros and cons of each modification decision, no free lunch always a give and take. Almost need two of them :) one modded to the max for fun + a trailer.

Agree completely. Really easy to get sucked into the “mods” rabbit hole.
