Hello everyone. Is there any trick to shifting from Park to Reverse when I parked uphill? I am not sure if I am doing it right. I applied on the break and shift from Park to Reverse. It is very tough sometimes and I wonder if I am doing anything wrong or there is a technique to this. Thank you.

keep automatic parking brake enabled
and when you park and shift it to P, wait until
the parking brake engages before letting up
on the brake pedal. takes the weight off the
parking pawl in the tranny

Exactly. This is most likely an issue of how the car is parked. Before "automatic parking brakes" were a thing, the way to eliminate the problem you're having was: Stop with foot on brake, shift to neutral, apply parking brake, shift into park, turn car off. While it seems like a lot, you can do it in a second once you train yourself. Even with the automatic parking brake, I still find myself reaching down and applying it before I take my foot off the brake. Try it, let us know if this helps!

Like I used to when I drove STD Trans, on inclines, I put the 4Runner in neutral, put in the parking brake, once engaged, then into Park… zero pressure in the parking pin.

Yes I am an old school. Before the automatic thing it was super simple.

Yes that is what I usually do when I had an STD trans and also manual parking break. I will try and see. Thank you.

I actually do this parking/brake maneuver in my garage, it has just the slightest incline going in that I feel the 4Runner slightly rock back after placing in park, the typical way without putting it in neutral first, when I take my foot off the brake.

How do you manually apply the automatic parking brake? My auto brake activates a minute after I turn the motor off when I park.

Just discovered the easiest way and so simple. When ever u park up or down hill. First apply foot break than shift to park, continue to apply foot break until u see the word PARK indicator in your dash board than release the foot break. Now when ever you put into REVERSE from this method it will go so smooth 😆😆.

Omg. Super simple Tony. Just discovered now. So when ever you park whether flat, up or down hill following this procedure. First apply your foot break than shift to PARK. WAIT until you see the word PARK indicator appears on your dash board than u can release the foot break. Boom. From this position when you start your car again from PARK position to REVERSE or what ever will be so smooth 😆😆. Dummy me. Just discovered now after clueless for 3 months.

Thanks for the advice I was able to figure out. On my TRAIL HUNTER automatic parking break always engaged in PARK position. So first I applied foot break than shift to PARK position and wait until I see the word PARK appears on my dash board. Now when I started the car I can go from PARK to REVERSE on flat/incline/decline super smooth. Thank you.

You can also turn off the auto mode, if you wish. You can also still use the switch even when auto mode is enabled.

Parking brake
The parking brake can be
set or released automati-
cally or manually. In auto-
matic mode, the parking
brake can be set or released
automatically according to
shift lever operation.
Also, even in automatic
mode, the parking brake can
be set or released manually.

yes long press down, mid will show auto park disabled
long press up, mid will show auto park brake engaged

at any time in any mode, you can grab the park brake* and
pull up, it will engage.

*don't do this in motion unless it is an emergency
it will jolt you real hard, it cannot be feathered like hand or foot brake
