I am still trying to figure out the best way to transport my 5 year old Weimaraner in my TRD ORP.

I thought a kennel would be the best and safest answer, but it frankly just takes up far more space than I thought it would and makes transporting camping gear in the cargo area with the kennel back there rather difficult.

I haven't entirely ruled that option out, but the space issue is a problem for me.

Now I am looking at canvasback cargo liners and sidewall protectors, and am thinking that along with a dog harness that clips into the seat belt might be a viable answer to protecting the rear area from her, and to keep her safe during transport.

Curious what other solutions people are using.

I wanted to make sure I could still use the back cargo area, and I don't have any kids, so I use the 2nd row seats. Bought an Orvis dog hammock based on recommendations here that I really like. Pricey compared to other options but the mesh in front of the rear seat air vents has already been a huge help in keeping my dog cool when we get back from hiking or backpacking.

I also use a Ruffwear harness attached to a Kurgo seatbelt attachment:

I made a small ramp that I can use to get the dog into the backseat, it just lives on the floor of the rear seats so i can slide it out. I'll take pics later, wife has the 4R right now :)

I also have a 6 yr old Weimaraner and take him out with me and/or the family all the time. I use a Kurgo harness since it’s rated as an actual safety harness for cars. Then I attach that to a Tuenne seatbelt attachment that is made out of climbing rope. Here’s a photo of the harness and the Tuenne attachment

I have two elderly golden retrievers. 85 pounds each. They fit great in the cargo area, but no room for much else. Taking them on a trip in a few weeks, so the only option I see is a cargo box on the top for storage. I got a nice collapsible ramp that works great getting them in and out. Ramp collapses to size of a fat satchel. Cargo net works good too and I can keep a water bowl and jug of water in that for watering them at stops.

Yeah, I was surprised at how much room is lost once you throw a dog crate back thats large enough for a 60 pound dog. Thats the safest approach and I am bummed thats not going to work out for me. I was hoping it would because it would be safe for my Weimaraner, minimize dog hair in the rest of the vehicle, and keep the windows free of dog nose art which is hard to remove if you dont get to it right away.

I had almost gone with canvasback liners but I am not fond of the idea of the adhesive backed velcro attachment method of doing things.

I think my my solution is going to be a 4kines cargo liner

https://4knines.com/products/suv-ca...ource=lantern&utm_campaign=product-finder-suv

with a barker bed SUV bed

dog-car-bed

and I will get that Kurgo restraint or something similar mentioned previously to keep her restrained back there..

I still haven't ruled out a dog crate of some type if I end up taking her on longer trips and on those trips id probably use a hitch mounted cargo rack...I honestly don't think roof storage will work for me, I basically doubt my ability to load things up there without damage myself or the vehicle (I am 58, had rotator cuff surgery on one shoulder and I think the other shoulder will need it within the next couple of years )>

I did get some rubber mats from Lasfit (the Amazon Lasfit store) that cover the backs for the rear seats. The factory rear seats backs are like velcro to dog fur. The mat are nice, custom fit (holes for the tie-downs, etc.) and they firmly stick to the backs. I already had the optional Toyota 4Runner/TRD mats which includes a nice cargo mat. I was considering the getting the canvasback side cargo covers, but I think I am resigned to the cargo area getting that well-used look. I still might get those side cargo area covers though.

Yeah I have those...

the thing I don't like about canvasback is that it requires adhesive backed velcro strips on the interior trip to attach those sidewall cargo covers. I'm just not a fan of that method of attachment. If you every decide to not use those covers, that velcro will still be there and it is a hassle to get off and after a few months or a year of baking in the sun it may be impossible to get off easily. Thats just me though..

I'll probably try to rig something up with harbor freight moving blankets as added protection and using existing attachment points to secure them somehow.

I'm probably being overly ridiculous on this but I just keep thinking back to my 2011 TE 4runner, that back area got pretty beat up after about a year of usage due to my not being careful enough.
