For those who are also annoyed at the rear wiper only cleaning to 7:00 (my 4th gen worked great, and I could easily put a larger blade on it)....

I haven't really investigated the housing yet, but I'm assuming there is a motor assembly and a stop (gear or housing) that stops the wiper at 7:00 position and then pulls it back across. Now, I'm not a mechanic or an engineer, but in theory couldn't the motor/stop be adjusted to stop and return closer to 8-9:00 position?

And, if this isn't possible on the oem motor, couldn't a 3rd party create a replacement motor/housing that would allow that same size wiper blade (that hides up in the housing) to wipe all the way over to 8-9:00 before returning back? They would sell a ton of them I'd bet.

On my 4th gen I had to replace the wiper motor assembly 2x due to rust, etc. It wasn't too difficult. If a replacement like that could work on this model, that would be awesome.

the only problem is the housing cutout doesnt really allow a position for the blade to go further than that position.

you would have to replace the housing cover also.

you could modify the housing cover on the left side to cut out maybe to about 8 or 9 oclock position at most. otherwise you would have to find a completely new housing to get further than that for minimal cutting of the oem cover.

I cannot agree more with the OP’s disdain for the sweep range of the rear wiper. My 5th gen had the same sweep deficiency , I.e. stopping at the 7:00 position.

I cannot be a 100% but I seem to recall that when I raised this Issue many years ago with a Toyota service tech he indicated that the sweep was designed for right-hand drive vehicles as they have in Japan. Given these vehicles are marketed in NA, you would think Toyota could flip the sweep from the opposite side of the window.
it drives me bananas to have such a helpful feature as the rear wiper yet it doesn’t clear enough of the window to fulfill its promise.

the toyota tech you are referring to need to learn about the global models toyota sells. the 4runner is only built for the usa market.

the prado and fortuner and hilux surf are built for the other global markets that are not usa and are related to the 4runner. the closet you can get to the 4runner is the gx550 which is still a stretch.

the LC 250 is more closely aligned with the prado

edit : and btw the sweep is the same on the other older models, just they sweep from left to right to 7 oclock position instead of the usa right to left to 7 oclock position.

but most have a motor wiper (going thru the glass) at the bottom of the window and sweep from 9 to 3 oclock
