Modding vs preserving warranty?

New to the forum and got my 26 SR5 a week ago. I was curious as to what the consensus is for modding vs preserving the warranty for guys that have dealt with Toyota?

Most of what I want to do is cosmetic (tint, roof rack, seat covers, larger tires, etc). Not looking into tunes, exhaust, etc while the warranty is active.

Id assume larger tires and the increase in "miles" would affect the warranty mileage? Or does it actually benefit you since you've gone more miles than the odometer shows, but need to base records maintenance on the mileage difference? Does the tech in the 4Runner tell the truth when they scan and diagnose it?

Also, how far can you go with lifts/suspension before you push it with the warranty?

Where my head was at as well. Guess I just wanted confirmation since talking to the Old Lady about it is an exercise in futility

just remember if you get the toyota extended vsa, that also would extend out your oem warranty window past 3/36 and mods you could do

I buy Toyotas because they make reliable vehicles. They do this by holding the parts manufacturers to high standards. If a part breaks too often then the supplier is on the hook. Punishment could be losing the contract to make OEM parts to paying for the actual repairs. Other brands don't seem as stringent. I also don't buy the extended warranty. It's a risk I'm willing to take. Other people are less prone to risk. Extended warranties are a money maker. Otherwise they wouldn't sell them. Can you live with risking being denied a warranty because of a mod you did on a vehicle that is very unlikely to need any warranty work? If it was 2025 and the first year this generation came out I might be a bit more cautious. OTOH are you willing to drive in a vehicle that you would like even more if you customized it? And for how long would you wait? Only you can answer that.

Yes, BUT, there is an OEM-safe margin above the wheels/tires specced on a factory SR5. For example, going up to a 32.6” diameter tire that matches the higher off road trims seems pretty darn safe.

With most of my wants being cosmetic, Im thinking Im safe unless I get the lift bug and start swapping out the suspension, CAs, etc. Looking like 32-33" ATs and calling it a day outside of cosmetics

Just ran across this in researching tires and large thane factory sizes, and seeing the variances in the size among trims. And the TRD OR (non hybrid) having the 32.6"s, so Im thinking those to 33" and calling it a day. Looking at 285/70 17s (32.7") since I like the wheels it came with (for now at least).

With that being said, and Ive read that the speedometer/odometers are all calibrated the same among trim levels, going up to about 32.6/7 should cause no issues on the drivetrain and Id imagine no issues with the warranty since its not a drastic change

I have not heard of anyone on any of the forums complain about their warranty being voided or any statc what so ever from a Toyota dealer?

I purchased the 10 year bumper to bumper due to the fact that there are so many electronic gadgets. If one fails it could cost 1000's of dollars
to repair

I purchased a 2026 TRD ORP and had the dealer install the OME MT64 3" lift kit with Baja Boss in 295s before i drove off the lot. They are a line item in my purchase agreement contract and its 100% fully covered by toyota.

certain things like suspension is a very simple component, springs and shocks, or even just a collar lift like westcott design my dealership complimented me on picking the westcott. Messing with the engine with an intake or exhaust your probably okay on but I'll wait till the warranty expires.

I ordered my 4r, waited for 2 months, once it got to the dealer (Longo Toyota) they installed the lift kit and wheels/tires and they put it in the contract as a line item which is covered 100%
