Hi all!

I have been looking into getting my Trailhunter undercoated - Woolwax, POR15, etc. - and am leaning towards POR 15. I have a local shop that will do it for $2,995. Their moto is "80% prep, 20% product."

Have any of you folks used this type of undercoating? Pros or cons? Is there a better product out there?

Would love to hear others experiences.

Yes. POR15 is an epoxy based undercoating that can be applied directly over rust. It is very messy and application can be a pain as it needs to be brushed or rolled on. It is an excellent product to protect high impact areas such as the fender wells, pinch welds, and frame rails. POR15 is highly regarded in the offroad community. Over the rest of the undercarriage including within the frame rails (through injection holes) woolwax, dinitrol, or ceramic coating is probably sufficient.

Below are pictures of my r34. All surface rust blasted off with dry ice and laser (last pic). Por15 frame rails and out. Within frame rails, the rest of the undercarriage, transmission tunnel dinitrol. Industrial grade ceramic coating over everything.

Obviously price will depend on how much prep and what you want done.

The issue with undercoatings vs waxes is if salt water gets under the coating it will eat steel twice as fast. This is because it does not dry out nor rinse off as efficiently . Waxes will have to be reapplied often like every other year-ish.

I use an aerosol cosmoline spray I purchase on Amazon (RP342). It sprays as an oil and dries as a wax, which is nice if you do a lot of your own work on your vehicle. Some of the sprays like fluid film stay wet and make a mess when you're wrenching.

I used POR15 on my 69 mustang for undercoat. I’d recommend it. Time consuming though for sure.
