I recently installed the Greenlane front bumper on my Gen 6 4Runner and wanted to post a real-world review for anyone considering it. This is not a hate post at all, the finished product looks excellent, the design is clean, and once installed it really does transform the front end of the truck. I’ve run Greenlane products on my rigs for years, so I went into this wanting to support the brand and I still think the bumper itself is a solid product. That said, there are a few things future buyers should know before jumping in.

First off, the install was very difficult. I’m not new to this stuff, I’m a Red Seal tradesman, I do my own installs and modifications regularly, and I would still rate this install somewhere between very hard and borderline custom. Total install time for me was about 12 hours, where most bumpers I’ve installed in the past were more in the 6 to 8 hour range. A big part of the frustration was the complete lack of install instructions. There was no sheet in the box, no clear guide on the website, and no proper walkthrough I could find for this specific bumper on the Gen 6 4Runner. I ended up cross-referencing a Tacoma guide from Greenlane along with a competitor’s Gen 6 4Runner install video just to figure it out. In my opinion, that should not be necessary for a product like this. If Greenlane released a proper install guide, this install would be much more manageable.

Second, Greenlane advertises that the bumper works with the factory skid plate, but that was not my experience. To make it fit, I had to cut roughly 2.5 inches of steel off the front of the factory skid plate near the radiator area. Without doing that, the bumper would not fit properly. That is something I think should be clearly disclosed in the product description, because anyone expecting a true bolt-on with the stock skid is going to be in for a surprise.

One thing that was actually better than expected was winch compatibility. Before buying, I contacted Greenlane and specifically asked about fitment for the winch I planned to run. I was told I would likely need to relocate the upper portion of the control box, so I spent almost another $200 on relocation parts. Once I actually did the install, that turned out not to be necessary at all. My WARN EVO 10-S fit without any modifications, and honestly it looked like there was enough room that even a 12,000 lb winch might fit. So in fairness, the bumper seems to accommodate that winch setup very well right out of the box.

Another issue was the mounting design. The bolt holes have a large amount of play in them, roughly around three-quarters of an inch or so, which I understand was probably intended to allow adjustment. In practice though, it made final alignment a complete pain. Instead of a more fixed and straightforward fitment, you end up fighting the bumper while trying to get everything lined up perfectly. Maybe Greenlane has reasons for doing it this way, but from an install standpoint it was frustrating. I also have some concern, even if only theoretical at this point, about whether that much slotted adjustment could allow movement under heavy off-angle winching loads. Maybe it has been fully tested and is a non-issue, but it definitely stood out to me while installing it.

The other thing I noticed was that the factory bumper corners lose some support with this setup. The OEM design uses brackets in that area to help support the plastics, and those are effectively deleted here. Once the plastic bumper portions go back on, the corner areas feel noticeably less rigid than factory. To me, this seems like something that could have been solved pretty easily with a simple add-on support bracket tied into the Greenlane mounting system. It may never become a real-world issue, but it does feel like a weak point compared to stock.

Overall, my opinion is this: the final result looks amazing, the bumper design itself is attractive, and once installed I’m happy with how it turned out. But the install process was far more difficult than it should have been, the factory skid plate claim was not accurate in my case, and there are a few design details that could use refinement. My honest take is that this bumper feels like it works, but it also feels like it could have used a bit more development before release for the Gen 6 4Runner. I would not recommend this as an easy driveway install for the average owner. If you are very experienced, patient, and willing to figure things out as you go, you can make it work. Otherwise, I would strongly suggest having a serious shop handle it.

At the same time, I want to be clear that this is constructive criticism, not a slam on the company. Greenlane makes good-looking products, I still support the brand, and I think this bumper has a lot going for it. I just think buyers should know what they’re getting into, and I think Greenlane could improve the overall customer experience a lot by adding proper instructions, clarifying fitment details, and addressing a couple of the support and mounting issues.

Iv ran Greenlane products for almost 10 years, regardless of my experience on this install, i can vouch they stand behind their product and make good stuff. I suspect this first gen design for the gen 6 was a bit of a test from their Tacoma winch bumper design.

Regardless, you wont be disappointed once you got it mounted.

I am curious since you have experience. I have watched a few different videos on using recovery gear and one thing that a couple have mentioned is these type of "hidden" bumpers and winches might look nice, but they can be a pain if you actually have to use them. Meaning, guiding the wire while pulling it in, or trying to get it loose if stuck, e.g. Have you found that to be the case?

I have significant experience winching. Iv been on trips you could call "Winch Fest's". There are pros and there are cons to a hidden winch system.

PROS:
- Its sexy
- No one can mess with your winch in parking lots
- Its clean
- Less heat for break in or theft of winch
- Winch is protected from impact
- Winch synthetic cables are UV protected and last longer
- Less police pull over in areas where mods are restricted
- Lighter front end pull with less front end droop on breaking (this is a bigger deal then most people think)
- No loss of approach angle (no gain either)
- More quite on highway with less air dam noise for people who highway ride a lot

CONS:
- Need to go wireless remote otherwise your scuba diving to connect
- Replacing the winch line usually requires removal of bumper (This design appears to have openings big enough to allow this without bumper removal)
- Less air movement around winch allowing winch to get hotter then usual
- If remote has no free spool or clutch lock button, activating free spool can be a pain

From my experience and how i use my rig i prefer a hidden design. After a few break ins and thefts i prefer keeping a $1500 winch hidden and locked down from thieves, but the biggest difference i saw was in front end sag. Moving a 75 lb winch 10 - 12 inches closer to the front axle made such a massive different for me that i no longer needed to change front end suspension to compensate for the massive weight and extra push on breaking from the winch. Anyone running a winch outside the bumper will likely tell you the nose dive was significant after install. Another thing is wind noise, I live on highways for sometimes 4 - 6 hour long rides, 30 - 60 minutes you wont be bothered, but after 2 - 3 hours of listening to the thing whistle on your front end from highway speeds will be enough to put you over the edge. Last thing, Synthetic lines are expensive, Especially good ones. i replaced a few lines on external winches, ever since switching to hidden bumpers iv never had to replace a line on a winch, they seem protected well from rocks and debris as well as UV damage.

In the end its personal preference

That's great to hear, I'm in Manitoba as well and deciding between Van44 and Greenlane and it's nice to see some real world info on Canadian products. With these small bumpers steel vs aluminum isn't as big of a deal for me regarding weight, but the Van44 is cheaper and has a free install, although I do prefer the Greenlane recessed design. What was your thoughts for going with the Greenlane option? It also looks like a tight fit between the plastic grill and the bumper, I'm curious with your experience if you think it would cause any damage to the grill with flex, bouncing on washboard, winching from side angles etc. It really does look like a nice product and I appreciate the write-up.

Nice to see other Manitobans here, sure would be nice if we could see some spring weather soon eh?

I went with Greenlane because its a brand i have worked with for almost 10 years. I ran their full kit on my previous Gen 5 with no issues at all. Its also a family owned business that seems to really care about quality. Specifically this bumper though was of major interest because it is light with respect to aftermarket bumpers. Running a hidden winch bumper that weighs the same as factory was extremely appealing to me as i was trying to avoid nose dive when breaking as much as possible.

Regarding tightness, it may look tight, but there is enough space for movement should it happen. I would not be worried about some flex effe ting bumper touch of any sort.

Hope this helps!

Which license plate relocation bracket is that? I bought my Trailhunter used, already has a winch bumper (with Warn Evo 8S) installed. Not sure about the brand. There are dozens of brackets similar to that on Amazon that all look like they would be in the way when winching.

Awesome writeup, thanks for that. Not sure if you posted anything regarding your Rhino Rack but I'm curious how you like it and how you have it mounted. Does it mount to the factory rails?

Thanks!

Ill be doing a separate post later this week of my full build. Keep your eyes open for it! Ill be sure to discuss the roof rack in it :) and to answer yoru question, yes it mounts to factory rails, no drilling required!

Ill also try to remember coming back here and linking the post.

2025 4runner 6th gen Greenlane Off Road Hidden Winch Bumper Install & Review - READ BEFORE YOU BUY!!! _W0A4886-Edit

I installed the CBI Super Stock Covert Recovery Bumper on my TRD ORP hybrid and I've been really happy with it. Total install time (including the WARN EVO 10-S) was about 4.5 hrs, and the hardest/scariest part was just cutting and finishing the edge of the plastic bumper cutout.

I found this Milwaukee Oscillating Multi Tool to be the best way to cut the plastic bumper with precision and control, and it left a very clean cut edge that just needed a light sand to eliminate any remaining small burrs.

The port holes on the front are big enough to reach the manual clutch / free spool switch or correct spooling issues, and I am running mine with both the OEM wireless controller and the optional WARN bluetooth controller.

Just an update to this post. I forwarded this write up to Greenlane and received a response. As expected they are extremely accommodating to review the issue. They suspect Toyota changed the front end design on 2026 from 2025 and i may have encountered changes they are not yet aware of. They also believe this because they made it clear that the exact winch i have should not fit unless i relocate the control box, so the fact i was able to install without relocating the box was clear evidence Toyota has done something to give more room in the front to accommodate a winch.

Greenlane indicated they will be updating their website to note this change as well as looking into the 2026 model to possible update their bumper.
