Glove box latches

I got annoyed looking for the little grommets to tighten up the glove box door rattle, because even the ones that clearly say they fit the 2025 4runner have a mix of reviews that say they don't actually fit, not even close, so presumably either they fit older 4runners, or maybe Tacoma is different than 4runner etc.

The task is so simple I just made my own.

There are a few other free 3d print models on different sites but they are just STLs with no source cad file and still no clear certainty which models they actually fit. IE, I found one that claims to fit 2024, andother that claims to fit 2025 Tacoma, not 4Runner. Maybe the Tacoma one fits but a few reviews of other ones say not.

So this is a parametric custimizable cad file that has simple numbers for the key dimensions right in it.

You can tell if it will fit before having to find out the hard way by buying and shipping, because you can just see the numbers and see if the holes in your glove box are 13mm x 13mm then it'll fit. Not just because I said "fits 2025 4runner", but because the cad file says 13x13 and you can just go look at your holes and see if they are 13x13. Maybe the hybrid or some other trim level is different than my SR5, maybe 2026 is different than 2025, maybe the lexus or landcruiser is different etc. I don't know and you don't need me to. You can just measure your holes and plug that in and spit out a grommet that exactly fits your holes whatever they are.

If you don't have a printer, there are countless 3d print services. You still end up paying and waiting, but at least now you have full knowledge and control over what you're getting instead of the useless descriptions on amazon etc that don't simply give the exact dimensions which would have removed all doubt.

the rattles and cracks in this vehicle are a major annoyance. Enough to turn me off Toyota for any future purchase.

It is no more or less complicated than it is. That was a meaningless question.

As for the infinite other possible approaches... Do you also wonder why anyone chose any other paint color than whichever you happened to preffer?

Solving the rattle with bumpers has the advantage that it's direct and simple. No special tools, ubiquitous materials available anywhere, super practical. If you value those aspects above all others then great. Enjoy your bumpers. You won at getting what you want.

But bumpers also means, you have to stick them somewhere and look at them and not knock them off, and deal with them someday falling off when the adhesive dries out or the glue freezes or dissolves whatever, and the rattle is silenced by holding the door as far open as possible instead of as far closed as possible.

While the grommet is more out of the way, does not use any glue, is practically impossible to either knock off or fall off even years later, and holds the door as far closed as possible instead of as far open as possible.

Neither approach is superior, they just address different priorities and prefferences. Clearly there are some non-zero number of people who want grommets since there are multiple versions of them for sale on Amazon and ebay and elsewhere. I simply happen to want grommets, and I happen to have a 3d printer, and all the ones I found on-line were no good for one reason or another, and I happen to not be interested in trying to sell something so trivial, and so here is a free cad file to make them for anyone who might otherwise buy them.

I don't claim it to be a big deal. It's just a thing.

Only this time it's open source with a parametric custimizable cad file that has simple numbers for the key dimensions right in it. You can tell if it will fit because you can just see the numbers and see if the holes in your glove box are 13mm x 13mm then it'll fit. Further, if your glove box has something else, you can just change those numbers and spit out a grommet that exactly fits yours without having to pay someone $12 and wait for shipping just to roll the dice and see if you get lucky.

Mine has considerable play but does not rattle. Have you tried the felt or rubber used on cabinet doors? They are self adhesive and available at Lowes or Home Depot

Thanks for designing this and contributing to the community. I will see how well it works in TPU, however the glove box has not rattled for me while driving. It does have quite the amount of play.

Mine doesn't always make noise, just when the road is rough.
I'm sure felt pads do work great but I didn't try bumpers or felt or anything else because I don't want just any old possible solution, I want a specific solution.
I didn't want bumpers, I wanted grommets.
I didn't want anything that relies on adhesive or glue.
I wanted the door held at the closed end of the travel rather than the open end of the travel.

Now that I have the shape dialed in, I'll get a set commercially printed in black nylon MJF or SLS so they look nicer than my grey pla FDM prototype.

For the record, I printed in pla+ and will probably get a set done in black nylon MJF now. Both hard materials that should never wear out from the bolt striking and grinding on them.

The grommets don't work by cushioning, they work by just pressing the door into the spring loaded plunger bumpers in the dash.

Though I'm curious about the possibility of tpu also. Maybe the hard grommets would still rattle if the vibration was extreme, and maybe rubber ones would still not no matter what?

But I've never even tried to push tpu through the bowden setup on my dinky little monoprice select mini 2.

TPU doesn't feed well without direct drive extruders.

The TPU print kept unseating so I will use PETG which is the strongest filament I have. This did remove the jiggle from the glove box so thank you.
