Recently purchased a TRD OFP Max. I am a first time 4runner owner. I have noticed that people are quick to make modifications shortly after purchase. I am just curious if modifications, like aftermarket lifts, void the warranty? Are most modifications being done by Toyota so that responsibility can be placed on dealership in worst case scenarios?

It depends. If you put 37 inch tires on and your transmission or engine goes then they probably won't honor the warranty. If something on the electronics goes then they will still warranty it. If you put a puck lift on and the CV joint goes then likely no warranty. If coolant or oil starts leaking then they should honor it. They typically will try to give you logical justification for why your modification voided the warranty if they don't honor it, but most things are still covered.
According to Grok:
Installing aftermarket items on your new Toyota 4Runner may affect the warranty, but it doesn't automatically void it. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Toyota cannot deny a warranty claim unless they can prove the aftermarket part directly caused the issue. For example, if you install aftermarket wheels or tires and a suspension component fails, Toyota might deny coverage for that component if they can link the failure to the modification. However, unrelated systems (e.g., the engine or transmission) should still be covered.
Key points from available information:
  • Toyota’s factory warranty includes a 36-month/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage and a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

  • Aftermarket modifications like lifts, oversized tires, or electrical add-ons can lead to warranty claim denials for affected components if the modification is proven to cause the failure.

  • Routine maintenance and wear items (e.g., brakes, tires) are not covered, and damage from misuse or accidents is excluded.

  • Accessories purchased from Toyota at the time of vehicle purchase are covered for 36 months/36,000 miles, while those added later have a 12-month warranty.
To minimize risks:
  • Keep records of all modifications and maintenance.
  • Use reputable aftermarket parts and professional installation.
  • Consult your dealer before major modifications, as some are more lenient.

  • Consider sticking with Toyota-approved accessories for better warranty compatibility.
If you’re planning specific mods (e.g., lift kits), check with your Toyota dealer to clarify potential impacts on warranty coverage for related systems. If you share what mods you’re considering, I can dig deeper into the details.

I did my first oil change yesterday at 1500 miles at the dealer and asked the service guy about the mods and he explained just like yehosh 1993 describes it.

Never had a warranty voided but I will tell you taking off your floor boards won't void your warranty.

If you do your own oil change and pick a different viscosity make sure it's back to 0w20 when you bring it in for any type of warranty repair.

Mostly they don't check oil viscosity. But you never know.

Yes cold air intakes would be a problem if you had a turbo issue. They would use that as an example.

And you potentially could void your warranty if you tap into the electronics of your car for exterior leds.

If something should go wrong with your electronics because these are rolling computers, you will be tagged.

But mostly this is all pretty Common Sense stuff, but, and I say but, they will find a reason to back away from costly repair.
