Can the Trailhunter rock rails be extended? (door ding protection)

This is going to sound weird, but my 4Runner will spend most of its time in the city. To make the rock rails more usable, I'd love for them to double as a guard against door dings. Unfortunately, the OEM rock rails do not extend past the door bulge, so if someone opens their door into your car, it'll hit the door before the rock rails. Is there a way to "extend" the stock rails via attachments, etc. that allow them to extend past the door bulges?
