Hey 4Runner family,

I’m trying to do transmission flush maintenance on 2025 SR5 and I noticed that there is no drain plug on the pan for my transmission? Need help please. The way its looking. I might have to drop the whole pan to flush out the transmission.

I’ll bite. Why are you doing a transmission flush?
It's good maintenance, especially after you've had a new vehicle for just a bit flush it out and get all of the metal shavings out if any. You want to ignore the dealership when they tell you things like " change your oil at 10,000 miles and transmission fluid is for the lifetime of the car". Those are marketing ploys not reality.

Vincenzo, to answer your question, the reason I’m doing this and the rest of the fluid flushes is to make sure I get all of the break-in debris and metal particles out of the system. During the flush, I noticed the rear differential had a heavy buildup on the magnetic drain plug. With the transmission, I also noticed shimmering metal particles in the fluid.

I plan to do two more fluid changes before the vehicle reaches 40,000 miles. With the transmission issues and failures that Toyota has been experiencing, I want to protect my wife’s vehicle as much as possible. I did the same flushes on my new Toyota Tacoma as well as seen the same result in the fluid.

After working for Honda for 19 years, I’ve seen the machining process firsthand and understand that small manufacturing particles and imperfections are normal during the break-in period.

It's a nice concept but I can't even locate a transmission dipstick or place to check or add fluid let alone a "flush" which would require all the fluid in the system including the torque converter. Explain how this flush is actually done if you would.

During our last service visit, we had the tech check the transmission fluid level which was determined to be at the correct level.

The service invoice reads...

"DUE TO TRANSMISSION BEING SEALED, THERE IS NO DIPSTICK TO SHOW CORRECT OR CURRENT FLUID LEVEL. SCAN TOOL WAS USED TO CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE AND ENSURE THAT SMALL AMOUNT OF FLUID FLOWED OUT OF THE OVERFLOW CHECK PLUG. TRANSMISSION FLUID AT CORRECT LEVEL."

I have the dealer do it, takes 25 quarts on the gen 5's. Haven't had them do it on my gen 6 yet

toyota removed the trans dipstick (and not just on the 4R but alot of models)

toyota started the sealed trans back in the early 2000's (no dipstick)

if i remember correctly, to check the trans level, the fluid has to be at operating temp and level with the fill hole.

watch a few car care nut video recently posted and see how he fills the diffs, but if i remember from the video's he didnt even bring the fluids up to temp before drain/fill

Lake Speed, Jr. just covered this and provided quantitative data. If you hope to keep your car for +\- 200K It’s a very good idea to change transmission & transaxles. The analysis of the oil showed considerable debris.
