Any advice for me (25' Tundra 1794 to 25' 4R Platinum)

Last year, I moved into a Tundra 1794 Hybrid from a 2018 4R TRD Pro that I LOVED. I guess that I just wanted a change (and some updated tech) after driving the 2018 4R for ~7 years.

I really, really LIKE the Tundra. Just not sure that I will ever LOVE it - but it is very nice/plush being as it's the 1794 trim. I am concerned about the engine recall on the Tundra's. My 25' isn't (and probably won't ever) be covered under the recalls because it's a Hybrid - but it's still the very same engine. That being said, I believe that the engine issues are slightly overblown across the internet, and I believe Toyota warranty will take care of me should I ever have the problem. However, I think I've just come to the conclusion that I'm not really a pickup kind of guy after all. I'm 50+ and maybe it should be though? But it's just not.

Which brings me to today...I've come across a 25' 4R Platinum with ~1k miles on it (dealer demo/Heritage Blue) for what I believe to be a good price ~60k. Which coincidentally just about matches what I'd get for my Tundra 1794 trade-in. So financially, it's would basically be a wash right now with potential better resale down the road on the 4R Platinum, no? A few mods/upgrades were done on the Tundra (wheels/tires/tonneau cover) and I'd be out those, but I think I'm ok with that at this point.

Any thoughts for me? All advice welcome! Many thanks!

I share your worry on the Tundra. I was in a different place as I have a 2025 4R but was planning to buy a Tundra within 12 months. The engine issues have really put me off. I wish Toyota would discover the root cause, impacted VIN # and confirm which VIN's are NOT impacted. Until that happens, I'll not be purchasing the 1794 edition. I was also in the market for the Sequoya before I purchased my 4R. Same engine as the Tundra I think, so same risks.

I do value a truck for the flexibility of the bed and racks for Kayaks, etc. My guess is, I may have another vehicle before Toyota clear the air on the issues.

For you, it might make sense as you indicated you don't really need a truck.

I love the Heritage blue..... Good luck with your choice.

AF555, I would not hesitate to make the move. I have had a 4th Gen 4 Runner, 5th Gen 4 Runner, 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Pro and now a 6th gen Platinum. I have had the vehicle for around two months and I really enjoy it. About the only thing I miss about the Tacoma is not being able to carry 4 x 8 sheets of plywood (I'll just get a small trailer for this).

The ride is amazing and I have had no issues going back and forth over Vail Pass. I'm not sure why people are so down on the hybrid. When you put up the turbo gauge and hybrid battery gauge, there are some amazing things going on with the software. I really think the hybrid is taking the bulk of the initial torque when you accelerate. Ride quality is also very good, the extra weight of the battery is over the axle and gives great traction. The extra height in the back floor does seem to be about 3 inches more than most dogs feel comfortable making the jump.

For all the praise of the 5th Gen 4 Runner and 3rd Gen Tacoma, they are gutless dogs when towing. They seemed completely maxed out and gasping for power with a 2500 lbs trailer. I am really hoping that the 6th Gen hybrid is much better at towing. Having an integrated brake controller, path assist, tow mode and even a hitch light are great. Just wish they would move the 7-pin connector up on the bumper.

the wife drives the 23 tundra platinum and i drive the 25 4R platinum. she loves her trucks (since 2012 taco) i prefer the 4R (since 1998).

they are both optioned exactly the same. our tundra is in the recall and i we are 9th on the list for a long block replacement. have 19k miles on the tundra and nothing is wrong with it (i did oil changes at 1200, 5000, and every 5k miles, but switching to 4k intervals now). did oil change on the 4R at 1400 and will at 4k and every 4k afterwards.

i dont mind the tundra but i need the ft4wd for getting to work as i am on the road before the plows (5am).

i picked mine up for $63,114 new and pretty loaded to the gills before trade in ($67,843 msrp).

not sure about $60k for a used platinum but in my opinion it should be less by about $1-3k since it used (but thats my opinion based on my location and dealer)

i imagine if i went about 100 miles south it would be about right for a used platinum since they dont sell at invoice and only do MSRP selling.

the biggest difference is your peace of mind. if you are leary of the tundra i would get out of it. that nagging feeling in the back of your mind will fester.

the 4R is mostly roses but there are some thorns vs a tundra. the driver seat space is a little tight vs the 1794/platinum, and the 2nd row (even though its smaller in our 23 tundra vs our 2018 tundra, is still worlds bigger than our 4R).

if you want space while driving you cant beat the tundra for really long trips.

if you are concerned about mpg, the 4R is not a big jump from the tundra initially. but mine has slowly increased from around 16 mpg to 18 mpg avg since oct-2025.

creature comforts and tech is order of magnitude better in 4R vs the 3rd gen tundra. tss 2.5 in the tundra is woefully lacking vs the tss 3.0 system in the 4R.

another downside on the 4R, the 360 camera view is lacking vs the tundra. i hate the placement of the rear camera vs the tundra. even the side/front view camera's seem to be better on the tundra than the 4R.
