I have been going back and forth on the rock sliders and based on your input, I think I'll pass on them on this trip - I may add in the future. I might just remove the steps for the trip since they are an easy bolt-on.

What a process to get the permits!! I was online right when they went online for the Sept/Oct/Nov permits, with three sets of choices for dates, and ended up getting my last choice - it is pretty competitive, I was done booking within 5 minutes and I don't think there was much left.

That said we got Airport, Murphy, and Labyrinth. My wife is riding the trail on a mountain bike so we really needed three nights. Another buddy is going to join us in a Nissan Titan Pro4X. We are really looking forward to the trip and seeing your pics makes me think it is a great choice. We will for sure check out the black crack. Thanks again for your thoughts!

Taking the steps off is probably the right move. And yeah I just barely managed to get our permits despite being on the website the minute they opened up. Your campsites are spaced out nicely so I think you’ll have a better time of it than we did.

That's how it started for me, I saw the road from the main overlook years ago and said if that's possible to drive, I've gotta do it.

Full time 4wd is better, they didnt give it to you to control costs and separate the different vehicle classes. The land cruiser and 4runner are very similar vehicles, they have to have some differences between them.

One correction, unless your friend did some modification to their vehicle, they cannot be in 4low with the center diff unlocked. 4Lo automatically locks center diff on every toyota I have seen including my old 100 series.

100 Series (and 4th gen/GX) have a center diff lock to lock the center differential at will. So engaging 4 Lo does not lock the T-case--only puts it in low range. The CDL button must be pushed to engage the center differential lock.

This is not correct, at least on the 99 land cruiser 100 I had. It would automatically lock the center diff, turn off abs and vsc when switched into 4 low. People mod them to separate those functions.

Hmm. I wouldn't consider myself an expert, but every 100 Series I've ever seen has the CDL button for a center diff lock. This is a picture of a 1999 LC, and the CDL button is in the lower left corner--the depiction of the drivetrain with an X for the center diff. Perhaps it functions differently on the earlier LCs--again, I'm no expert.

Interesting! After poking around a bit, it appears that only the 98 and 99 LCs could not run 4 LO unlocked without the mod you referenced. 00-07 you could (which is what I was familiar with--I assumed all 100 Series were the same.
