New sr5 owner. I need to get a brake controller installed, haven’t found any walkthroughs of how to do it on the 6gen yet though and I’m a paint by numbers kind of person.

Sounds like the concensus is adding a redarc would be better than going oem? As long as you don’t mind drilling or whatever? Or should I consider a wireless model that hooks up to your phone/infotainment system?

There are discussions on this forum about brake controllers. I wanted it, but the one that was available that I purchased did not have it. I do not need it right now though, perhaps never. I would prefer to go with the OEM built-in one, but my understanding here is that this cannot be added later, which seems a bit odd.

I was waiting for somebody to attempt to install the OEM trailer brake controller. But i just eneded up buying the redarc brake controller.

I'm pretty sure it's possible to install the OEM brake controller; it probably won't be plug-and-play.

Did you buy the 4Runner trail kit with it or just the brake controller? How did the install go?

If you have a trailer kit, you dont need to install anything for brake controller. I havent installed my redarc, but is plug and play

Any thoughts on if the OEM one would be "better" than a 3rd-party (assuming it can be obtained and installed, and ignoring any complexity in that)?

Dont actually have a trailer with brakes yet but it seems to have power. Was a bit of a tight squeeze, ended up just using zip ties to anchor it to the metal bracket behind the weird circular comportment. The plastic piece that came with the elite seemed to fit best into that little tray, ended up not using the two extra that came with the kit

Nice! Going to install this soon, although it's the Liberty model, for under $200. I'm only towing a trailer camper. Everything looks easy enough and thank you Toyota for included the plug-and-play harness adapter on all trims for trailer brake controller.

I used the Bluetooth Curt Echo trailer brake controller few days ago for my 3k lb camper but didn't like it. The app is funky, has many annoying pop ups/warning. The strap sucks! Plus the adapter is too long and hangs too low for our 4Runner. I prefer a manually controller & not messing with any app.
