One of the reasons I opted for the iForce Max was the improved potential to power 12v DC and 120AC devices while camping off the grid for days at a time. I'm working with a shop in Portland that is going to help me implement a wiring and power management system that feeds off the 12v battery (located in the cargo area on the left side behind the rear/driver side tire) which in turn gets its power from the hybrid battery. I don't know the ins-and-outs of how it all works, but I'll have a 12v outlet to power my refrigerator/freezer, and 120AC for laptops, etc. with power monitoring and management that will prevent battery drain.

In the meantime, I'm able to run my Dometic CFX3 45 liter electric cooler off the 2400 watt 120 V outlet whenever the car is running. Eventually, I plan to have it wired into the Dometic DC Hardwire Kit, where it can run continuously, drawing a modest 8.3 Amps at 12 volts, even when the 4Runner is not running.

BTW - you get a nice look at the D-pillar Cargo Area Lights (a PIO) in the photo below.

This refrigerator can chill down to -7° for freezer items, or easily keep 5-6 days worth of drinks and perishables cold on a road trip. In fact, it has room for 67 12oz cans if that's what you need. ? It fits perfectly in the hybrid 4Runner cargo area (matching the height of the rear seats) and has enough clearance so you can open the lid to access items in the cooler without having to pull it out. There are tie-down straps you can use to secure it to the anchor points for additional safety, too.

Next up, let's take a look at the gear storage system I'm using from Kitworks. I'm using the KitWorks Gear Box which is a collapsible storage bin with an internal divider system which allows you to customize it for your gear. It's waterproof, has Molle attachment points everywhere, and uses velcro to make it infinitely configurable to your needs. They also offer velcro patches so you can label each case (this one is "KITCHEN").

Here's a look inside. The top lid is all velcro so you can attach storage options there, and you can see how the divider system works. This case has everything I need for my camp kitchen, including the FSR 2-Burner Camp Stove with wind screen, a refillable Fuel Keg with 1lb of propane, my Windsor Magware stainless steel Bowl & Plate set, cutting board, collapsible wash basin, french press, spices, staples, frying pan, table cloth, fire-starting supplies, and utensils. Everything fits, and nothing rattles—even on washboard roads.

Best of all, I can stack the Kitworks Gear Boxes two high and efficiently load the cargo area with maximum space efficiency in the hybrid 4Runner. When stacked, they do partially block the rearview mirror, but since I have a digital rearview mirror now, that isn't too much of a concern for me.

By the way, my second CAMP gear box has camp chairs, a hammock, first aid kit, tarp, ground cloth, rope, toiletry supplies, flashlights, and enough room for any trip-specific items I need to throw in. The cases are sturdy enough that you can sit on them in camp, and there is enough room to take four of them in the rear cargo area (along with the fridge) when the back seats are tilted upright (not folder forward).
Hi.

Did you get that dc component that draws power for your fridge taken care of with the Portland company?

What is the name of the company?

Thanks.

If you're asking about the Blue Sea Systems outlets that provides 12v in the rear cargo area, I installed that one myself. You can read the detailed desciption here:

https://www.4runner6g.com/forum/threads/blue-sea-systems-12v-power-panel-install-in-orp-hybrid.4046/

If you're looking for a great installer for something like that, I highly recommend Phil Gragg at Offroad Toy Outfitters in Vancouver, WA. They could install this Blue Sea unit, or the Dometic version of the same for you very easily. Their number is (360) 499-6656.

I'm actually going in the week after Thanksgiving to have them install this kit from SDHQ:

Which will bring clean power forward to the engine compartment for my winch and compressor.

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

In your original post you said you are working with a shop in Portland that is going to help you implement a wiring and power management system that feeds off the 12v battery (located in the cargo area on the left side behind the rear/driver side tire) which in turn gets its power from the hybrid battery.

That is the part I was asking about.

The hardware you are showing seems like it is for a battery under the hood. I don't know if you have changed your mind about tapping off the rear 12V battery or not.

I am very ready to tap off the rear 12V battery with a REDARC DCDC charger in between the rear 12V battery and my own 100Ah LiFePO4 battery that then powers a cooler and a few other things.

Thanks

Oh, right. I explored that option, but it seemed like it was going to be quite complicated. I ended up just using the 2400W Inverter to charge an EcoFlow power station instead. It'll power the Dometic refrigerator for 3-4 days continuously (as well as laptops and devices, as needed). As soon as I start driving, the inverter charges it back up to full within about 1-1½ hours.

Okay, thanks for clarifying.

I tried the 2400W port with a Keurig coffeemaker to see if it would work and it did fine. However, the vehicle has to be in Ready mode. When I turned the Keurig on the engine did not come on to charge the traction battery, but I heard a humming sound from under the hood. I am okay with it because it surely beats making coffee in the morning using a stove.

Tapping off the rear 12V battery isn't very complicated.

I have had extensive conversations with REDARC tech support for implementation of the BCDC1225D between the rear 12V and my 100Ah LiFePO and they assure me it will work fine. The REDARC will come on only when the voltage to the rear 12V is higher than 12.7V. At voltages lower than that the REDARC will deactivate and no power from rear 12V will be consumed. The voltage of the rear 12V is 12.7V when the car is not in Ready mode.

I have all of my wiring ready. If I do this I will come back and post success story.

Right. I wasn't saying it was complicated to tap the 12v battery — just that it turned out to be more complicated than I thought to get the 12v battery to maintain its charge using the hybrid battery as an input.

I see. That would be complicated. Best is the second DC-DC charger, in my opinion. I had looked at these power boxes and decided that I don't want to pay for all the bells and whistles, and an inverter I don't know much about or have a use for, and decided to have my own Aux battery setup.

Good luck to you, and happy travels.
