All of the 'trucks' I've owned in my life have been GM. So I'm curious about Toyota differentials. Is there a standard size or a few specific sizes that all Toyota trucks (including truck based SUVs) use?

Ultimately, if I end up with a new 4Runner, I'd likely be going with the base model, and I'd like to upgrade at least the rear to a Truetrac limited slip.... possibly the front too but upgrading the rear would be much more important.

And another thing, where would I find a shop that can do this kind of upgrade? I'm currently driving an older V8 trailblazer, and back when it wasn't quite so old, I started asking around if anyone does custom rear diff installs.... zero takers, nobody wanted anything to do with that.

OP, not all Toyota axles are created equally. My Tundra had an 11” ring gear

I have the same question. Just bought a totally bare-bones SR5 RWD, and I really want a proper TORSEN differential with a bit better gear ratio. My understanding is that these SR5s come with an electronic LSD feature clamping brakes on the slipping wheel....and the ratio is 3.58. Would like a 3.73 or 3.90 ratio for towing.

I don't know if these are new rear axles, or if Toyota pulled them "off the shelf" from last the last generation and/or same as the longer-standing Tacoma which may have options out there already. Aftermarket options???

When we have time in the shop our plan is to pick up 3.90 gears from a GX460 and see if we can fit them. We are also working on a torsen-style limited slip for the rear. Some international market Prados came with a torsen internationally for the 8.2 rear diff but they're extremely expensive on partsouq etc.
