I guess the engine bays in the 4Runner and Tacoma are large enough that this super special 3D-shaped cover isn't needed.

Note: that spec sheet is for the transversal (front wheel drive) configurations like Lexus RX and Toyota Crow where turbo ends up between engine & Firewall. Since the Motor in a 4R is longitudinal mounted, that cover would be pointless. It gets enough air flow from the front and side I guess.
In our 4runners some things are slightly different but the bones are the same.

Well that was my point...Toyota felt this engine in these other models needed a special cover for air flow. It was just interesting that these trucks get nothing. But I've always hated the extra plastic crap in the engine bay of my previous Toyotas so I'm good with it lol

Engine bay is so cavernous with the T24A in the Taco and 4R that there's plenty of room for air to flow every which way around the engine.

Also, air to air intercooler for longitudinal applications vs a small air to water intercooler for transverse

Yes good observation on the Intercooling setup difference. I believe the Turbo is slightly different too. Correct me If I'm wrong.
