Hey everyone,
I’m having an issue with my OEM TPMS sensors after transferring them to a new wheel setup and wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this. I moved my factory sensors over to a set of RRW 17” wheels with Toyo ATIII 35” tires, and now I’m getting a constant TPMS malfunction error. For those who’ve run into this, did you end up reprogramming or replacing the sensors to fix it? I’m also about to get another set of RRW wheels with a more aggressive offset, so I have the chance to either install new TPMS sensors or reuse the OEM ones, just trying to figure out the best move to avoid the same issue. Any recommendations for reliable aftermarket TPMS setups. Thanks.

hook up to obd-ii and scan, which one(s) are not reporting in ?

if they are OEM and not clogged or damaged from transfer, they should 'just work'
after change wheel procedure in MID

■Situations in which the tire pressure warning system may not operate properly
●In the following cases, the tire pressure warning system may not operate properly.
• If non-genuine Toyota wheels are used.
• A tire has been replaced with a tire that is not an OE (Original Equipment) tire.
• A tire has been replaced with a tire that is not of the specified size.
• Tire chains, etc., are equipped.
• An auxiliary-supported run-flat tire is equipped.
• If a window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.
• If there is a lot of snow or ice on the vehicle, particularly around the wheels or wheel housings.
• If the tire inflation pressure is extremely higher than the specified level.
• If wheels without tire pressure warning valves and transmitters are used.
• If the ID code on the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters is not registered in the tire pressure warning computer

Wheel position registration can be performed by oneself. Wheel position registration is performed by driving forward with moderate left and right turns. However, depending on the driving conditions and driving environment, registration may take some time to complete.

You can force a relearn
select “Tire Rotation”, and then press “OK”.
Drive at approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or more for approximately 10 to 30 minutes. When wheel position registration is complete, the inflation pressure of each tire will be displayed on the multi-information display. Even if the vehicle is not driven at approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or more, registration can be completed by driving for a long time. However, if initialization does not complete after driving for 1 hour or more, park the vehicle in a safe place for approximately 15 minutes and then drive the vehicle again.

FWIW OEM Toyota sensors are the best by a long shot and last a very long time
you really need to get a diag tool on the OBD-II and read what is being picked up
in the TPWS section

yeah the manual states how you can save yourself the cost and headache of getting new sensors.

even works when swapping between summer and winter wheel sets.

Thanks for the reply! I recently had the Westcott pre-collar lift installed along with new wheels and tires (RRW 17” and 35” Toyos). What’s strange is that the TPMS malfunction didn’t show up right away — it appeared after about a 45-minute drive, then disappeared on its own two days later. Yesterday, after another 45-minute drive, the TPMS malfunction warning came back again. I’m getting new rims soon, so I’m planning to have the installer reprogram the sensors when they’re mounted to see if that resolves the issue.

start on page 541 of the 4R manual (gas only manual) or 538 in the HV manual

you can go thru that first before you get to the point of replacing the tire sensors.

Wanted to share an update, the TPMS malfunction ended up being caused by removing the spare tire. I didn’t realize the spare actually has its own TPMS sensor, so once it was off the vehicle, the system threw the error. I removed the spare since I’m running larger tires and wanted to cut some extra weight, especially after adding the roof rack, rock sliders, and heavier tires. Plus, with the Westcott pre-collar lift, my TRD Pro has a bit of a reverse rake, so I figured removing the spare might help balance that out a bit. Lesson learned, TPMS sensor is in the spare and that caused the error!

does your TPWS display show 4 or 5 pressures ?
I have a donut, not sure if it has TPWS in it, my display only shows 4 tire pressures

Yeah, the display only shows four tires, but the TRD Pro actually has a full-size spare. Same wheel and tire setup (though the spare tire might have a slightly different load rating). I stopped by 88Rotors, and the guy there told me that removing the spare is what caused the TPMS malfunction. It's common for there to be a TPMS in the spare tire.

older gen's and on other BoF vehicles they didnt always have a 5th sensor.

on the new 4R the MID screen will show tire pressure for 5 tires or 4, depending on trim
