but that effectively gives you 7 yrs and 64k miles (since it starts after the oem warranty at 3/36k)
Are you sure about this? I'm pretty sure the VSP warranties start from mile 0. That's the advantage since the first OEM year is full coverage, but years 2-3 it gets less and less. With a Platinum VSP, you get full protection anywhere from 1 mile or 35999 miles and within the first 3 years.

wow, more than double what I paid for 7/100 platinum vsa from fd-warranty
I'm so jealous. They don't sell to us in OR or WA states. I have talked to Troy multiple times over the last 16 years. :) We have to shop around local in-state dealers to find the best price unless someone knows a site like that which works in the PNW.

VSA starts at mile zero so it can't be used for 3/36 of it's lifetime. after 3/36 then it kicks in.
so 7 years means 3 are 'eaten' and you get 4 actual additional covered years

it's a pain to look at it that way but it makes the math far easier later on when an issue occurs
and you aren't fiddling subtracting miles or years

thats why i said effectively, you still have to buy the vsa before 3/36k miles. i bought the 23 tundra 10/100 at roughly 32 months / 17k miles, just before the 3yr mark since i wasnt close on mileage.

gave me time to see if we were keeping the tundra or not long term.

after about a 6 months after buying it (VSA), the wife decided she wanted something different (something that can park in the garage for our winters actually)

yeah its a weird way to track the effectiveness of the vsa since you technically are paying 3yrs/36k miles for free on top of the oem warranty of 3yrs/36k miles.

the vsa only is used after the factory 3/36 expires. all the info is located at

bold, underline, italic is my emphasis

Rather than quote the entire thing, I think the last two posters are correct and there was a difference between VSA (Warranty) and VSP (Maintenance). Warranty starts at mile 0 and Maintenance starts at a specific interval - I guess when you purchase it or is it always at the end of the OEM warranty?
