Hi All,

New to the forum, and to the 4runner scene. Recently picked up the SR5. I'm very curious to see if anyone else has experienced the issues below:

- Paint- I have the ice cap, and have noticed that the body panels are slightly different shades. Not talking about the bumpers, but the doors, fenders, etc. Look at the color between the driver door and passenger door, and the passenger door compared to the rear body. Didn't notice until a few weeks in but now I can't unsee it.
- Brakes- I just started noticing the squeal
- Speaker or door panel rattle when playing music- seems to be isolated to one side
- Terrible smell when driving with the rear glass down- mainly when giving it enough throttle to hear the turbo kick in. Rotten egg and burning smells
- Clunky transmission- occasional rough shifting. This is by no means a silky smooth shifting transmission.
- Slight whine or whirring sound at very low speeds (<20 mph) that increases pitch with throttle, and decreases when letting off the gas. Listen with the window down as you are go from a standstill to slow driving. Not sure what this is but it makes me wonder about the transmission.
- When starting the vehicle, it idles high then comes back down.
- Ticking sound at idle, maybe injectors? Also sounds like an exhaust leak at times.
- Fair amount of steering wheel feedback- what seems to be excessive vibration (for a new vehicle) in steering wheel when driving down gravel road at low speeds. Makes it feel like something is loose in the steering/suspension.
- When unlocking car at night- are the corner/amber bulbs supposed to be so dim?

Thank you!

- Paint- Ive seen a few on the lot, and yes it comically off on certain colors. Most people wont notice, you have painters eye.
- Brakes- Theres a tsb out, if you take it in they should be able to address it.
- Speaker - Not sure check the sound settings and make sure it balanced (not in carplay)
- Terrible smell when driving with the rear glass down- Its exhaust gasses backing back in
- Clunky transmission- Keep an eye on it, check other threads for lemon transmission/symptoms.
- Slight whine or whirring sound - Normal
- When starting the vehicle, it idles high then comes back down. - Normal
- Ticking sound at idle, maybe injectors? - Most likely injectors
- Fair amount of steering wheel feedback- search "vibration" you may have a similar problem to others.
- When unlocking car at night- Not sure

Just picked up my SR5 RWD (July 2025 production date) last night (so only 50 miles so far) and some of what you're citing I see too, some of which sound normal.

I just wanted to comment on the transmission. There is a TSB for the trans, but for specific conditions (codes that come up upon scanning), not really just abrupt shifting....some of which I noticed too. If it worsens, maybe have them take a look. I did a lot of research on the transmission before I took delivery. In short, if your trans shows some specific codes, they will replace the whole thing. I don't believe there is a high-temp TSP, but I have heard some complaints about that, so study your trans temp gauge if towing or off-roading.

Thank you Dinosoar21! It helps to know at least some of this may be normal. As far as the transmission, assuming we wouldn't have any way to know if it's throwing a code before scanning- alert lights, etc? I'll try and search for the TSB.

True on the codes, but I think the trans acting funny would prompt a dealer to scan for a problem...and if it's really an issue, they'll apply the TSB, I presume. I know it sucks going to the dealer, checking in, waiting, etc. But know that Toyota is aware and working it. This driveline is it too many vehicles form them to ignore a solution, even if they ignore a customer...which happens.
