Hi all,
I wanted to share my experience installing the K&N Elevated Intake Snorkel. I decided to pull the trigger after a previous trip to the Pine Barrens put my 4Runner into limp mode twice.
I originally had the SXTH Element intake, but ultimately swapped it for the K&N 63 Series intake to make the snorkel installation possible. If anyone is interested in the SXTH Element intake, feel free to reach out.
All in, the installation took about two hours, not including drying time for the paint and sealant. I could not find any videos showing the installation of this specific snorkel, but the illustrated instructions provided by K&N were very helpful. Overall, I would rate the installation as medium difficulty, or medium-hard without the proper tools.
The most difficult part was tightening the nylon lock nuts inside the fender. They are located in some very tight spaces, and the approach angle makes certain tools difficult or impossible to use. I primarily used a ratcheting Allen wrench, but it still required quite a bit of patience and finagling.
I also took some additional steps to seal the intake using marine-grade sealant around the mounting bolts, the two silicone block-off plugs provided by K&N, and closed-cell weatherstrip foam.
One of my biggest takeaways from the installation was seeing how much dirt and debris gets into the fender area where the stock airbox pulls air from. Combined with the mud line shown in the last picture, that almost immediately justified the purchase and installation for me.
Overall, I am very happy with how it turned out. Happy to answer any questions.
Thanks!
