Toyota said they recommend changing the oil at 10k miles? I find that crazy, but someone on here also mentioned they changed theirs at 500miles? Why the big discrepancy there?

Also looking for recommendation for weather guards for the windows, who like what out there?

Thanks!

Personally I think changing oil that early is overkill. Whether 10K is too long is hotly debated (see this forum, there are posts on this). Many say they are changing oil at least every 5000 miles, some more often. Many do at least one change at either 1000 or 5000 (or somewhere in between). There is a video posted somewhere on this forum talking about this as well. I always wonder how much of this thought is "resistance to change" versus truth.

Not really an answer, I know...but I can answer your second. I purchased and installed window guards from Weathertech. They are made in the U.S. and fit perfectly and were easy to install. I pretty much forget they are there and look good. They do seem to help with the hammering wind noise if you have only one window open or the wrong combination of opening. I have not really experienced them much for rain, but I am sure they will be great for that. It does not rain much here, but also when I am driving I typically have the windows up--it is when I am off-road or perhaps long slow roads where I would open windows, but I have not done that since I installed them (I am way overdue!).

All of those blown V6s would have benefited greatly with a 500 mile oil change. I did one at 1000. I will do another at 6000 and then take it in for the 10,000

People want to pamper their vehicles.

There's plenty of superstition so lots of variation in what folks consider crazy.

It's not hard to find YouTube videos that suggest doing things differently than the manufacturer recommends.

It's a topic where one will never know if frequent oil changes or different oil weight or different quality oil/filter will make any difference so it's wide open for debate.

I still fail to understand why a very early oil change would be important. I know, the theory is that during the engine break-in period there is more particles worn from the engine which end up in the oil--a reasonable assumption. But what I do not follow is that everyone seems to ignore that there is an oil filter in place that should remove all that. If anything I would think it would make sense to replace just the filter, not the oil--although I am not convinced that is necessary either.

The logic goes, UOAs (used oil analysis) shows the presence of these break-in contaminants in the oil. The particles are smaller than what the oil filter can filter.

Re: changing the filter early, the recommendation is actually to continue using the original filter for 3-5k miles, because oil filters actually become more effective at filtration with use. Now, of course it would be possible to go too far in that direction (negatively affecting flow rate), so no one is recommending using any filter for more than 3-5k miles.

So combined, the idea is to change the oil early to get the break-in particles that are too small to be filtered out of there and leave the original filter in as it gets better and better at filtering over the first few thousand miles.

After the first few thousand miles, the recommendation has been proceed to a standard OCI - oil and filter.

Of course none of this is required by manufacturer guidelines. It’s just what some, in particular Lake Speed Jr., has come to through analyzing measurable and observable data re: oil and filters during break-in.
