How to increase power for towing?

I towed a 4000 lb trailer up the Coquihalla Hwy in BC (the "Highway thru Hell") with very steep grades (some sections range from 8%-12%) on 87 Octane and it fared waaay better than my '03 Lexus LX 470 V8. Worked hard through the steepest sections but had no problems overall. I have the ORP Hybrid.

there is no difference between 87 and 91 or 93 octane gas, they have the same potential energy.

the higher the octane only prevents premature detonation at a higher threshold. its all about the compression ratio that the engineers set on a engine.



slightly decrease performance (this is mostly throttle response and sometimes mpg)

I am about to order a brake controller for the 4runner so I can compare the towing between it and my GX460. My guess is the 4runner will have an edge, but only slightly.
I plan on selling the GX to buy a new Tundra so it will ultimately be a moot point because I wont be towing with the 4runner, except in an emergency.
