Hello, I’m looking at the 2026 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium iforce MAX. I want the optional “Tow Tech Package” but if I can’t get it on the 4Runner I’m looking at will the “Standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)” adjust to include a towed camper or is that only on the Tow Tech Package?
Thanks

4Runner's standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) can identify when a trailer is being towed and extend the area of detection to recognize and alert the driver to potential hazards in blind spots for not only the vehicle, but the trailer as well.

the standard BSM on all 2026 4Runners automatically adjusts its detection zone to cover your towed camper — this is not exclusive to the Tow Tech Package.

Tow tech adds this:
Integrated Trailer Brake Controller
Trailer Backup Guide / Straight Path Assist
Digital Rearview Mirror

Thank you for the information. I will likely have to buy 4Runner without the Tow Package.

Do you know a location that posts that information? Not that I doubt your word, but I’m about to spend alot of money and want to be sure.
Prior to your post, I was on the phone with Toyota.com and they couldn’t verify the capability of the standard ‘Blind Spot monitor.
Frustrating!!

Thanks again!

Do you know a location that posts that information?
Honestly, it was not clear to me that this function exists without the Tow Package (which I have) but it appears the info above is correct.
Make your own judgement by looking at the manual:
Sec. 4.5 Using the driving support systems (p 311 in my hybrid manual), under Turning the Blind Spot Monitor on/off:
■ Auto Trailer Detection (ATD)
Auto Trailer Detection (ATD)
detects if a trailer is attached by
using the Trailer Brake Controller
(TBC) (if equipped) or the
Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) sensors.
 Trailers that use TBC can be
detected by using the 7-pin
trailer connector. (vehicles
with the Trailer Brake Controller)
 Other types of trailers can be
detected using the BSM sensors.
 When a trailer is detected via
the 7-pin trailer connector
(vehicles equipped with the
Trailer Brake Controller) or via
the BSM, and “Yes” has been
selected on the pop-up display
on the meter to confirm a
trailer is detected, the following
modes will change as follows:

.... lots more below that but hopefully it gets you there.

Thanks!! Sounds good. I’ll download the manual and read it thoroughly.

Thanks Again!

when BSM detects a trailer you confirm it on the dash

When a trailer is detected via the BSM, and “Yes” has been selected on the pop-up display on the meter to confirm a trailer is detected, the following modes will change as follows: • RCTA, PKSB (if equipped), RCD (if equipped), and the rear sensors of intuitive parking assist will be disabled. • The detection area of BSM will be expanded to a maximum length of approximately 50 ft. (15 m) from the vehicle’s rear bumper

BSM ATD function is triggered at every engine switch on/off cycle, the vehicle is stopped and the shift lever is in P or N, or the parking brake is set for more than 90 seconds

When a trailer no longer detected via the BSM, after disconnecting the trailer from the vehicle, and “Yes” has been selected on the pop-up display on the meter to confirm the trailer no longer detected, the previously disabled systems will be enabled and the detection area of the BSM will return to the previous settings

Trailer detection via BSM sensors may be delayed if the vehicle is in a crowded
environment such as busy parking lot, area surrounded with trees (camping ground) or in an environment with objects in the immediate environment that prevent sensors from sufficiently detecting the trailer

and there is a lot more in the manual about this....

I set up my trailer last weekend. I have the full towing package and can confirm that the BSM system did adjust for the trailer. I would highly recommend the tow package if you can get it.

1. The integrated brake controller is very smooth. I had a Redarc brake controller in my Tacoma, and it would grab the trailer brakes and cause wheel lock even at very low gain settings. The integrated controller has much finer gain control and is much smoother at activating the trailer brakes.
2. The trailer backup assist (TBA) was very easy to set up and worked well.
3. The hitch light is really helpful when attaching the hitch in the dark. I have max coupler hitch and everything is painted black. A little extra light to see the hitch connection is helpful.
4. The auto trailer detection is nice and provides on-screen assistance when backing up the trailer
5. I think this is on all models, but you can turn on and off the center line when in reverse. This is really nice when are about 6-inches away from the hitch.

Thanks for the information. Yeah I definitely want the tow tech package. But I’ll have to settle without if it’s not part of the options of what’s available. The best $400 option there is and for only $400 they should make it standard equipment.
