First time 4runner owner. I'm just wondering if it's normal to have a whistling type sound (hard to explain) when shifting out of park to drive reverse ect? It goes away after about 3 seconds kinda sounds like and electric motor/solenoid functioning.

parking brake support most likely (PKSB), its on by default. you can look it up in the manual if you want to turn it off perm.

Could it be the turbo? If you set your MID to see the turbo boost screen you should be able to tell if the whistling you hear is correlated to the turbo boost on the dash. (helpful vid: mid settings instruction; one of several related posts: placard for MID settings) Once you hear it you will know if that is it.

Yep - your theory probably more likely than mine, but when I hear the word "whistle" I think of the turbo sound in my 4R.

It's not the turbo because im just at an idle like to back out of my driveway. Kinda sounds like the torque converter lock or unlocking? Like I said it really hard to explain the sound happens every time I go from park to drive or reverse or vice a versa warm or cold dosent matter. Thanks for any help yall can give me

a bunch of Toyotas
probably the automatic parking brake.

epb actuator has a motor and spindle to press pads to rotor

and it's kinda loud if your windows are down
or you are against a wall or in a garage
