We decided to see how well the 6th Gen tows up in the mountains of AZ this weekend.
Truck specs
2025 Off-Road Premium Gas
285/75R17 Falken Wildpeak AT4s
17” Icon Rebounds
Westcott Sliders
Stock suspension
We loaded up our 2 Dirtbike’s and utility quad on our 7x14 trailer and headed up.
Dirtbikes - 250lbs each
Quad - 1000lbs
Trailer - 1700lbs
Trailer and toys weight about 3200 pounds. And we had roughly 700 pounds in the truck with 3 people and gear.
This thing did amazing. We were able to do the speed limit the entire time averaging 70mph. A few time we hit 4k rpm’s going up the 6-7% grades.
Gas mileage
220 miles round trip
10mpg going up the hill
12mpg going down the hill
16-17mpg without trailer
A lot of this is due to our larger tires
Loading is key.
We usually use our Tundra to pull this trailer and it really doesn’t matter how you load the toys on the trailer but in the 4Runner we ended up trying 2 different ways to see how it did.
Going up we have the quad over the trailer axle. Little fishy at time but all in all the trailer stayed steady. Very little rear end sag this way.
Coming back down we tried the quad in the front to add tongue weight. This made is worse. Trailer pulled straight but steering was a little touchy. Rear sag was slightly more but not bad.
One thing I really did not like was how quiet the motor is. It never really sounds like it’s working that hard.
Also once you plug a trailer in a message will come up on the dash asking to disable your rear sensors. Then once you unplug it will ask you if there is no longer a trailer.
All in all I am very happy with how the 6th gen performed. One of the main reasons we got it was for towing. We have a 30’ camper that our tundra tows and we used to use our 2003 Tacoma single cab to tow a 5x8 trailer with just the quad on it. That little guy would struggle lol. Now we can load everything on the bigger trailer with no worries.
