I wanted to share this because someone else with a 6th-gen 4Runner might make the same mistake I did.
When you open the tailgate, there are three holes along the bottom: two on the sides and one in the middle. The two side holes have rubber plugs, but the center one does not.
I assumed the center plug had accidentally fallen out, so I put a rubber plug in it.
A few days went by and I started wondering if that was actually supposed to be there. I searched online for pictures of other 6G 4Runners with the tailgate open, and I noticed none of them had a plug in the center hole.
So I went back to my 2026 4Runner and removed the plug. When I closed the tailgate, an insane amount of water came pouring out!
Then I remembered that it had rained a few days earlier, and I had also washed the truck.
Turns out, that center hole is a drain. The water gets in there and needs a way to drain out.
Bottom line: DO NOT PLUG THE CENTER HOLE IN YOUR TAILGATE! It’s a drain, and it’s there for a reason.
Sharing this in case anyone else thought, like I did, that a rubber plug was missing.
