It could detect the phone even through the metal, that's the risk.
What brand of phone? Is it compatible with the standard? If it's an off-brand, cheap ebay model it may not be fully compliant....
You definitely don't want anything in between the charger and the phone - it uses induction charging and it could easily heat metal up if it still tries to connect. That may actually be what's happening - that something in your case (or one of those popup holders), is interfering with it.
I just ordered a set of all the filters - searching on the web showed these numbers (not validated yet, haven't arrived). That's the carbon cabin filter FWIW.
Cabin Air Filter

Engine Air Filter

Just started having this happen after updating iOS ' wifi connection interrupted' errors. Powering off the radio and phone both seem to solve it. I suspect it's an apple problem from the timing.
stock fenders, with a fresh coat of wax...didn't quite cover up the Colorado Pinstripes I got on the passenger side ones this weekend, but that's more a badge of honor than a problem.
Just got the new RCI Rock Rails installed today...went with the 5 degree with plate version to help short folks climb inside. I had these on my 5th gen, and loved them.
Took my new mudbath up Red and White road above Vail, then down Muddy Creek, which is barely wide enough to make it down (next time I'll bring a chainsaw, just in case). Thought I'd gotten my first racing stripes/paint chips, but turned out to just be aspen bark smudges.

New MudBath pro got it's first mud (er dust) bath off Lime Creek Road near Vail today.
It's a *beast* driving up I-70 from town. The hybrid engine/transmission runs circles around the 5th gen - it could go faster up the hill than I was comfortable driving, and could even accelerate and pass on...
I'm not going to carry the thing when I park at the airport, and fly overseas. Leaving it as an open hole invites 'oh they just put it in the glovebox' thoughts. A plug says 'it wasn't there at all'.
I honestly can't think of any time I'll ever use it - I have vastly better bluetooth speakers...
I’d been searching for a speaker delete / blank plate so I can fill the hole when I remove the speaker before parking for a while. Came across this:
https://www.printables.com/model/1228986-toyota-tacoma-jbl-flex-speaker-delete-blank-4th-ge
Printed it up in ASA, and it works perfectly in the...
Once they leave the port, the price will be set (because that’s when the tariff is charged), but between docking and leaving customs, yep, the price could go up. My guess is that Toyota will just wait and raise the 2026 prices, since those are due pretty soon, and might even be reducing...
No issues with my 16 pro connecting, completely reliable. Make sure you don’t have other blutooth devices connected to the phone (e.g. AirPods, speakers, etc), when starting things up. watch for interference in the area - microwaves, smart home devices, etc. Makes sure your iPhone case...
