My 16 day trip took me and our family of 4 camping leaving Dallas area and traveling as far as San Francisco. We camped in Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, and made stops in Death Valley, Sedona and Page Arizona. Average MPG was 17.5 mind you we as the pictures show were loaded down! Mostly going 85mph except in the mountains. With all that weight though never had a problem getting up to speed or passing. It did feel a little bit twitchy at 85mph when the air would be disturbed passing semis sometimes. No one complained about seat comfort or anything like that.
We used to have a 2020 Toyota Highlander and so the requirement was that we had something off-road capable and with at least as much storage now according to Toyota’s official numbers it’s the exact same cubic footage behind the second row, however even with the same amount of camping gear it just seemed to fit better into the 4Runner. We were really surprised when we had a little extra room to spare. I’m guessing it’s just the shape being a little boxier instead of rounded at the rear.
Offroading went awesome. It was probably my kids favorite thing that we did. I attached a radio pouch from 511 to the front door to keep my radio when my son would get out to help a spot. I hadn’t done any real offloading in the last 15 years since I left the Marine Corps so going on trails in Sedona, especially the broken arrow Trail was quite the adventure but she did amazing in 4hi
Also, if you’re traveling with a cargo basket or a trailer, it will ask you if you have one attached. The second thing is, it will break automatically thinking you’re going to hit something behind you every couple of feet unless you turn off the parking assist that I have pictured.
