From other threads about what is and isn't included in the app without a subscription, I think I'm going to let the subscription lapse. The remote start is not something I use a lot, though I will miss the ability to know what the climate control is set to from a distance. I'll just have to revert to paying attention to where I park. Maybe go old-school with a yellow tennis ball on an antenna.
A related story about remotes: I'm a police officer and was on patrol for more than 17 years before getting hit by a drunk driver, which took me off the street. We respond to stolen vehicle calls. If it is at a mall or other huge parking lot like a Walmart Super Center, I get their keys and drive around hitting the panic button. 9 times out of 10, they simply misremembered where they parked. Once, I had a lady argue with me that she didn't park where her car was. It was 5 lanes over and further out that she was telling us she had parked it, but there it was over there annoying people beeping and flashing.
It wasn't me, but a teammate took a call, a report, and even had the vehicle put into NCIC as stolen. He was a less experienced officer so this is why it happened, but after the call, the victim got a ride home and then had to call us back to explain that the "stolen" vehicle was, in fact, at his home, and he got a ride back to the Walmart, where the other vehicle he drove was still there. The officer didn't use the key fob trick or even have the victim confirm he still had the fob for the vehicle he thought had been stolen. (Yes, people will steal a fob out of a purse while your back is turned and then abscond with your car.)
Anyway, enough storytime. I do find it disappointing that such an expensive vehicle with the amount of technology can't figure out a way to have some decent range for communicating with the vehicle without being vulnerable to relay attacks. Personally, I've always thought the relay attack could be solved with a simple motion detector in the fob to have it turn off after a while of no movement. I religiously do the power-down sequence on the fob before I hang my keys up. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to just leave my keys in my pocket for everything. I love the locking by brushing my fingers across the top of the handle and all that. But the limited range is super annoying.
