I picked up my 4Runner on Valentine's Day 2025, and with just a hair under 18,000 miles, it was already time to replace the OEM tires. I have a heavy foot, but in my experience, the factory tires Toyota provides never last anywhere near as long as the retail version of the same tire you'd buy at Tire Rack.

The Wildpeaks were at 3/32 tread so I decided on my ORP not go back with the Falken Wildpeaks. Now the WildPeaks weren't BAD per se.... they conquered the Devils Staircase in Sedona last year so they did okay in some loose sand and trails but I did notice wet traction drop off as they aged.

But to try the Toyo Open Country AT3 instead which I think have a nice aggressive look but gives a 60K warranty and allows a spare tire to still be used. They are SL rated and in less than 4 weeks will be hitting trails in Moab, Factory Butte, Toquerville Falls, and the Alpine Loop near Ouray Colorado.

Hi, I’m currently deciding between SL load and C load tires for my vehicle. I don’t tow heavy loads, and most of my driving is on the highway, with only occasional light off-road use.

Do you think SL load tires would be sufficient for my needs, including some mild off-road driving? I’d really appreciate your guidance. Thank you!

I did the same, I took delivery of my TRD ORP (Non-Hybrid) last June. But in December I got the Toyo Open Country AT3's installed at my local Toyota dealer. I am in Michigan & the winters are brutal here. The tires performed well & even in deep snow.

When it was launched Toyota took people out to Moab which IMO has rounded rocks because of the sand stone. Which I think these tires as well suited for. I do have worries about some trails that may have Sharp jagged rocks when I go into the rockies. I do think it's mostly what type of "off road" will you be doing. If its mostly gravel/dirt roads that are just too rough for a Rav 4 then I think they will be fine but if your going to be hitting trails rated 5 or higher then maybe a C rated tire. I'm still pretty new to off roading so if anything goes good or bad you'll see it on here from my trail report.

Got my Trail Hunter in May of 2025, just now going through the same thing, but I'm getting rid of the Toyo Open country at3s and moving to the Nokian Outpost nat. I was very disappointed in the toyos in snow snow in the San Juan mountains around Ouray and the less than stellar operation driving and rain. Several locals have gone with Nokian and really like the off-road toughness and the on-road driving ability. Also, they're one of the very best in snow which I found out the Toyo's definitely were not.

We'll see how they hold up, they have deeper tread than most all terrains and I've had them on for only a few weeks but so far they're awesome on the Alpine loop and black bear pass. They even did well on wet rocks. We'll see how they hold up, they have a great warranty.

can you share any tips on the "alpine loop". We are staying in Ouray and my tires are SL rated I want to do part or most the loop in 1 day and then Yankee Boy Basin another

I would recommend going early in the day due to the sheer number of Jeep rentals and utvs. They don't always know the rules, going up the mountain you have the right away going down find a place to pull over and let the others buy. It's a rather easy Trail, I had a Subaru outback follow me up recently and they had no trouble. There is good signage and even Google maps has the loop on it and most of the other trails if you don't have onyx off-road. Going early will keep you away from traffic jams but just be aware that if it's rained there might be some ice here and there since it freezes up there overnight year-round. The trail cameras come in handy but it's still a good idea to have a good spotter with you. Have fun!

Just a side note, since you're staying in Ouray, Brick House 737 is an excellent place to eat, elk bolognese is my go-to there.

Thanks for sharing. My ORP is about to break 20k miles and will need new shoes too.

How does road noise and ride quality compare to the stock Wildpeaks?

You should have no problem. I did it a long time ago with a rented Durango and stock tires.
