Borla S Type Exhaust System with Resonator Installed on @buckybuchanan's 4Runner. Sounds pretty good.

Muffler section installed only, not Borla's full cat-back exhaust system.

Hi - thanks for this write-up. I'm thinking about ordering this system below:

https://www.borla.com/products/toyota-land-cruiser-cat-back-exhaust-system-141032

Even though the link is for Land Cruiser, Borla indicates it works for both 4R hybrid & non-hybrid.

A few questions:

1. I'm a bit confused by your 'muffler-only, not full cat-back' statement above. Did you not install the full kit from Borla (muffler and the rest of the pipe sections)? If so, can I ask why?

2. Are you generally pretty happy with the kit? I have installed Borla cat-back kits on other vehicles and have generally had good experiences.

Thanks !

Glad to see someone install a Borla exhaust. But would be interested in thoughts on the cat-back setup. Had an s-type installed on my 21 Ranger and loved it. Got a lot of compliments on how it sounded. No drone and sounded great. It’s hard to nail the sound from 4 bangers but Borla is amongst the best. Will be installing the full cat back part #141032. Maybe an unconventional choice for Toyota but I’ve been impressed by what Borla puts out.

I just had the Borla S Type installed on my TRD ORP. I don't like the interior drone noise at lower speeds, 0-40 mph. After around 40 it goes away mostly. I'm thinking about going back to the Toyota muffler with either the Nytop axle dump or the SXTH Element Trail exhaust.

Interesting. This seems to be an ongoing theme for the 4R in the 1.5-2k RPM range. Do you drive in a particular mode like Eco?

I drive in Normal mode all of the time. Have not driven in either Eco or Sport mode. Only have 2250 miles on vehicle now.

Bummer. Is this your first aftermarket exhaust system or is it noticeable compared to past setups you’ve had? Guess what I’m getting at is that an aftermarket setup will always be generally louder than stock. If truly a persistent drone that does suck.

This is the first aftermarket exhaust on any of the Toyota's I have owned, 1st was a 1983 Toyota Hilux pickup. Only vehicle I've had an aftermarket exhaust on was a 1973 VW bug with a header/muffler before my numerous Toyota's. Total first world problem.

I went back to the original exhaust that came on the vehicle. Before I did, I had a 2 hour freeway drive. The drone was still there. I had the stereo CRANKED up to try and override the drone, no such luck. So I re-installed the original exhaust. Now I'd like to sell the Borla cat back system. Cheap! Half of what I paid for it.

I’m beginning to wonder if the slow speed / 1.5-2.0 RPM drone issues are unique to the Hybrid. I had the AWE OFG on my TH and it was very similar to what you described- just overwhelming in this RPM range. I pulled it and re-installed the OEM exhaust. On the other hand, I’ve seen folks with the gas only engine rave about how good it sounded with no complaints about drone.
