Ammonia Smell - Everest TDR Off Road

Hello New 4Runner Owners!

I picked up my 2025 Everest TDR Off Road non-hybrid about 3 week ago. I only have 650 miles on it, but wow, it is really nice. My first 4Runner, but not my first Toyota. My last one was a 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro.

I do have a concerning issue that I hope isn’t an issue, but I know all the knowledgeable people here will know better than me. Before I take it to the dealership….

I am having a weird smell coming from the engine or exhaust soon after a cold start and driving for a bit. It smells like ammonia. I can only smell it when I have the windows down. Mainly the two front and the rear. Sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's not so bad.

Anyone else ever experience this? Or know what it is.

My 2018 Pro did this; I always smelled it when I had the back window down and a couple side windows down. It would come and go, never figured out what it was, and it wasn't bad enough that I ever pursued it.

Every 4Runner I hvae ever owned smelled like this with the back window down. It's a liitle worse when on the throttle. Nothing to worry about. It's a Toyota thing.

I got my 2925 4runner sr5 in February. When I have the back window down and I hit the gas and the turbo kicks in I get this burning /rotten egg smell which changes over time. Just. Simple press on the gas when the turbo kicks in and it’s bad. Took it to the dealer and they compared it to another 2025 and said they smell also.
Have you noticed this with yours? I have 4k miles on it, switched up the gas etc and it still smells.

Haven’t had that smell. Just the ammonia. Weird!

2025 ORP 2007 Sport, both old and new have the same issue with the back window down. It is your own exhaust drifting in. You adjust the window so just a little comes in, open front window keeps this from happening plus you get better air flow.

I've noticed what smells like the catalytic converter when I'm in traffic and have the rear window down. I'm guessing that it may reduce in intensity as everything breaks in. I've only got a few hundred miles at this point.

No, that is a forever aroma. Open back window causes this. Like i said 17 years with my Sport never changed, my 2025 orp is the same.
