Exhaust axle dump came across my feed, and I was just wondering why 4Runner is long and loopy all the way behind the rear axle ?
Tacoma has it also, but A LOT shorter.

Any particular season for its lengthy set up (and more expensive!) ?

I assume it's a safety issue. I personally wouldn't want my exhaust outlet directly below a passenger compartment.

right. aerodynamics and drag.

you want to live your 4runner life in an invisible swamp of carbon monoxide,
go for it. I'd rather put the engine farts further back where aerodynamic analysis result dictate it should be placed.

Placement and pipe routing key factors, by design.
  • Safety: Engineers must ensure that hot exhaust gases are directed away from people, pedestrians, and combustible materials (like fuel lines or building structures).
  • Aesthetics and Packaging: Automotive designers factor in the overall vehicle design, available space on the chassis, and visual preferences. The placement is often a balance of functional and design requirements.
  • Performance: The exhaust system is an engineered path designed to manage gas flow, heat, and back pressure for optimal engine performance.

    • Noise Control: Mufflers and resonators, and their placement within the system, are designed by engineers to meet specific noise level requirements.
    • Regulations and Standards: Engineers must adhere to industry standards and government regulations (e.g., EPA, NFPA, ASME codes) regarding emissions and safety.

    • Of course you can modify the exhaust however you want, but consider what may be compromised

Their different. Look where the flange is on the 4 runner and then look at the flange on the taco. You could cut the 4R off and add a flange.
