Has anyone installed aftermarket power running boards? APM, Rough Contry or other?

Additionally has anyone had an OEM power running boards added to a trim level that does not offer it as a listed option? Specifically Trailhunter?

Looking to install. Advantages and disadvantages?

No and no… unfortunately.

None of the aftermarket companies have released power running boards for the 2025 4runner despite having the same mounting points as the 2024 Tacoma just different size boards.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the power running boards are only available on limited and platinum trims. Unfortunately the OEM power running boards cannot be purchased from the dealer separately at this time.

I have, but not on a 4Runner. I have AMP steps on my Tundra. They're about a 6 out of 10 on the DIY difficulty scale.

They've been on the truck for 12 years too. Still work fine and I use it daily. Before I had them, no way would I pay that much for running boards (I didn't pay for these), but after owning them? 100% would pay up to install them again if I needed them. Not sure I will on a 4Runner though, I can step into all the ones I've looked at without dragging across the bolster.

The factory/PIO cost for them is significantly less than what retail is on AMP steps, so if I wanted them, I'd try to get the dealer to tell the port to slap 'em on :D

the cost for piece meal the oem power boards is not worth the cost. it will be 2-3x the cost of the original FIO/PIO cost (and no one can match the oem cost of roughly $1000 for the power boards)

if you try to get the parts it will run close to $2000-$3000 and that doesnt even include the install labor.

best bet is to wait out the aftermarket brands to come out with something for 1/2 the cost of the oem piece meal bucket.

i would say try a good aftermarket static boards, RB series from go rhino are a good option.

i have notice that on my platinum the auto boards are kinda wonky feeling. the vehicle isnt tall enough and the step in feels weird vs how the boards feel getting into our 23 tundra platinum which sits taller oem wise.

as you get closer to being 6ft tall its just easier to step into the seat than to use the auto steps. half the time i just dont use the auto steps vs our tundra. its a different story with the wife since she is way shorter.

Agreed on all counts. If you're under about 5'8" or so, they may be useful...But if you're taller than that, they're an awkward height. But so are the regular steps. My factory OR steps are straight up in my way for entry/egress. I could step in easier without them, and they're far too high to not be just weird to use.

Don't tell anybody, but I'm considering removing just the driver's side step and leaving the passenger side one on for the wife. I give her at least a month before she'd notice.

I wouldn't trade the power running boards on my Tundra for anything though. They're perfect for that truck.
