Got out for some trail time
today with my buddy Tony and it did not disappoint.
We ran the Montana Mountain Loop, hit Pucker Ridge, and dropped into Queen Creek Canyon. Pucker Ridge was equal parts challenging and fun… and the best part? We had the entire trail to ourselves
When we jumped back onto Montana Mountain Loop, we ran into a group of Jeeps wrapping up some trail repair work. We offered a hand, but they were just finishing up, so a few minutes later we were rolling again, with me taking the lead in the 4Runner (took a couple of cool pictures in my mirror with a chain of Jeeps behind me).
From there, Tony and I did what we do best… wandered off trail a bit, explored some new lines, then rejoined the loop heading toward Queen Creek Canyon.
Once there, things got real. We were staring at inclines hitting 33° (measured and captured in the pics below
). Slow, technical, and demanding, the kind of trail that makes you respect the terrain.
I checked the clock knowing I wanted to be home before 4 and pulled off to decide whether to keep going. Right about then, another group of Jeeps showed up and started climbing. That was all it took. We looked at each other and said, “Ahhh, what the heck — let’s roll.”
Up we went. One climb… then another… then another. And off in the distance, we spotted one Jeep rolling backward, cliffside, looks like potential driveline failure.
Even though they were well equipped, it took serious effort to recover it. Multiple Jeeps linked together like a train to safely get it off the hillside and back on the trail. Impressive teamwork to watch.
They continued on, but Tony and I turned back… time was catching up to us.
Can’t wait to go back and run that trail start to finish. What a day!
