Hey everyone,
I’m Ofri from ASFIR — we’re also proud supporters of this forum — and I wanted to introduce our skid plate solutions for the 6th gen 4Runner.
We’ve been building aluminum skid systems for 40 years across different platforms, and with the 6th gen we focused on a few key things that kept coming up from users:
Weight vs strength
Our skid plates are built from 1/4" aluminum, roughly the thickness of four quarter coins stacked together, designed to balance strength and weight without going into heavier steel territory.
For the front skid, weight stays in a similar range to other options (~20–25 lbs), but the advantage becomes more noticeable as you add coverage:
Our systems are aluminum-first designs, meaning they are engineered specifically around the characteristics and limitations of aluminum, using design features that increase structural strength to balance weight and durability rather than simply copy-paste a steel design (we see a lot of these in the market, which sometimes gives aluminum a bad name).
This approach allows us to keep total system weight lower compared to heavier steel setups (typically 3/16") while still providing strong, durable protection across the full system
Usability (maintenance access)
One of the biggest day-to-day pain points we tried to solve:
A lot of skid plates require removal for oil changes.
Our design includes dedicated access points for both the oil filter and drain plug, so you don’t have to take the plates off every time.
Installation
All of our plates are complete bolt-on systems, designed to be installed in your driveway or by any local shop — no cutting or modifications required.
Coverage
Another thing we focused on is continuous protection:
Available options for the 6th gen:
Front-only (~25 lbs):
https://www.asfir.com/products/4runner-6th-gen-front-skid-plate
3-piece kits (engine + trans + transfer case):
We also offer free shipping on orders over $600.
Happy to answer any questions, compare setups, or get feedback from anyone already running protection on their 6th gen.
Always cool to see how people are building these out.

Another thing we focused on is continuous protection:
- Front section closes the gap up to the bumper (helps keep debris out)
- Modular system lets you go from front-only → 3-piece → full 4-piece coverage depending on your needs
