Very inspiring build.

is the frame attached to the vehicle at all? Could it start tipping backward if you pull both the fridge and the drawer full of stuff?
I built it tall enough where the 3rd row cup holders in the cargo area keep it from tipping. I did also use some turnbuckles to hold it to the tie downs built into the floor as an extra precaution. Mainly to keep it from sliding forward if the seats are folded.

Just a thought. A completely different idea. I have a gas only 6gen 4Runner. I also did not like that when the back seats folded down they were way above the back cargo area.
I’m an elderly widower. I will never be taking back passengers on my outback trips. (My cat Blossom, yes) I simply removed the back seats. Took me a total of 30 min. Now I have not only a completely level rear area, but a ton of room. Very nice.

Thats a great idea. I've been considering removing the rear seats and expanding the storage system with additional options through the rear doors on both sides. We still have 2 teenagers at home but they rarely ride in my 4runner. We most often take my wife's highlander when we the boys come along. That being said there are those occasions where I need it to be more than a 3 seater.

Love seeing DIY projects like this. Nothing better than a bespoke system to your own specific needs. Is painting the rest of the wood the last step in the project?
Yes it was. I used the rustolium bed liner for the durability factor. It took way more than I expected to get it all painted. Went through 5 extra large cans at $20 each. Doing it over again I would look into a different product. It is holding up nicely. I just got home from an adventure to Outlaw Canyon in the Big Horn mountains. It's a very rough road with lots of washboards and uneven bedrock that beats the crap out of you the whole time. Had gear sliding around on it and it came out unscathed. Nothing rattled loose either which in the end was one of my biggest big fears.

@RollingRocker - are you still intending to do a full breakdown of measurements/materials once you wrap this? I've been keeping tabs on this thread and am very interested in building my own for my SR5.

Never worked with 80/20 before though but it seems great.

Update on my version: Two issues. First, the carpeting is getting compressed under the feet so I'm going to have to unscrew them to get a little bit more height. The threaded part isn't very long so I may end up having to get some longer ones. The second issue is that unlike my 86 4Runner, there's no tailgate to rest the containers on. I'm pondering a low-tech solution which is a length of webbing and a buckle that's looped around the back rail of the frame and is attached to the back of the container so that when you pull it out, the tension would keep it from falling out. This would have the added benefit of keeping the container tipped so you could easily see and get at whatever is in there.

Yes I’ve been meaning to put that together and post it. I’ve put the setup through the motions a handful of times and am confident it will hold up. I used 2020 when I built my setup not realizing 8020 would be a better material. Even so I have had zero issues with it. I suffer the random squeak every once a while, but even doing some 4x4 trails last weekend it wasn’t that often. I have some issues with the fridge slide and need to modify that setup. It’s related to the slides. I should have used the same ones I did on the drawer. It doesn’t lock and I had to put bolt slide on it to hold it closed.

I was going with carpet initially as well and figured out that I wouldn’t be able to wrap it around the edges and have clearance for the install. I like the look of yours with the carpet better and might have to fashion some sort of mat.

That sounds like a great solution to your problem. Getting to every thing as easily as possible is key. Make sure to post some pictures when you modify it I’d love to see how you did it.

Will you be adding a bed for the top so you can sleep on it?
Yeah I've got it all set up for that. I am using a Luno Life Foam Air Mattress which fits perfectly and a Rumpl sherpa blanket. It's a super comfortable sleep setup. I just installed the Caliraised internal rear molle panels and upper shelf. I haven't gotten a chance to set it up completely but I have a tablet holder that will place my iPad like TV so I can kick back and watch it hands free.

When I don't have it all folded down I put a dog bed back there and my scamps love it because they can see out all the way around the back.

Does anyone know a way of securing a drawer system to the vehicle in the back of the 6th gen. I’ve see the way they do it in the 5th gen. There is the 2 tie down points in the front of 6th gen cargo area which would secure the front of the drawer system but noting in the rear of the cargo area to secure the back. Any thought?
