Hi, I have a 2025 ORP and just installed a hitch mounted bike rack. When I attempted to back up, the sensors decided the rack might be a car and it slammed on the brakes. Is there a way to disable the auto braking system?

thanks.

You might try depressing the traction control button on the dash for 5 seconds to turn off the collision avoidance and see if that works. If so, that turns back on after you turn off the vehicle so you would need to do that at the start of each trip.

You need to turn off PKSB. Go to into your cluster and go to Settings and scroll to PKSB. You can also tell it, Yes, when it asks if a trailer is connected, but that does get funky. That also turns off your beeps and braking, but getting it to allow you to turn things back on is hit or miss. I had to cycle my brake controller the one time I accidentally hit Yes on that question when towing bikes.

It was normal when turned off parking support brake (pksb), no when it asks if a trailer is connected

I turned off the PKSB on mine, and now it beeps a bit when backing up but no brakes slamming on since then. I do get a prompt on the screen, I just push the back symbol on the top left on the steering wheel, and it goes away. This is with a Velocirax 5X bike rack.

I guess this is what the progression of technology has come to, driving an oversized computer.

My '24 Outback Wilderness was smart enough to turn off and on the braking feature automatically when I had my bike rack on. Toyota could have easily figured it out.

I've played with a dummy trailer plug in a couple of configurations, though not a purpose-built one that will draw more power like a real trailer. I used a wireless trailer light and a wiring tester. Both fail to turn off the PKSB. The idea was to add the plug when I mount the rack. Don't even know if adding that would even turn off the PKSB. So, I have to either back rrreeeaaalllllyyyy slowly, or do the clickity-clickity to turn it off in the dash menu. I have found, though that once you turn it off, it stays off even after turning off the vehicle. It is a pain that it keeps reminding you, tho. I end up having to wade through the menus every time I mount or remove the bike rack.

The easy fix I discovered it should ask if a trailer is attached. Just say yes, it will automatically disable the sensors that cause that issue.

Yes, but disabling the attached trailer does not always work right and the system won't let you turn the safety features back on without doing that first. I had to cycle the brake controller and drive forward after deleting the trailer for it to take.

I have a 1-UP rack. I have found that if I install the rack, then fold up the trays (no bikes obviously) and drive it / back up the 4Runner asks if I have a trailer. I indicate yes and it turns off the appropriate sensors. then I lower the trays and load the bike and keep saying yes when it asks. Alternatively if I install the rack and load the bike at the same time, I have to turn PKSB off. Still get a annoying warning sound when backing up but at least the braking function is disabled. Seriously Toyota, how hard would it have been to code a bike rack option.

I have not had a vehicle that was smart about how it handles a bike rack with safety features.

I have never had it detected as a trailer at any time. It does seem to mostly not see or ignore the 1 up single tray. Once I figured out to just disable PKSB it was easy. I can tell you turning it off is easier than disabling safety features on other vehicle.

I hear you, they should have coded that in from the start. I heard rumor there might be a fix if you ask Toyota. Haven’t confirmed though. I will when I get my oil changed. But honesty for me having pksb off all the time doesn’t bother me. I haven’t found a situation yet that it was actually useful. lol I just back out of the alert on screen and carry on.
