Subject: 2025+ 4Runner ECU/TCU Tuning
Hello,
Regarding
https://www.4runner6g.com/threads/i...overland-tailor-tuning-ott.43951/#post-705023
Is there any kind of transmission tuning for 2025 4runner?
I have a non-hybrid 4wd SR5. I don't know how to articulate exactly what
I want but basically all my vehicles have always been manual and you
can't get a manual in a 4runner any more.
The thing that is driving me nuts the most is the delay when changing
from go to slow to go again, Like going (either steady or accelerating)
then briefly braking then resume going again, it takes forever to
actually react.
And also when just letting off the gas to stop accelerating but not stop
going, not braking, it keeps going too long before the engine actually
stops pushing.
Say following another car in heavy traffic so there are other cars close
behind and ahead, and they slow down and I want to slow down briefly and
then immediately go again. Like maybe I have a chance to change lanes
but only a small window.
Many times I have counted a full 3-mississippi before the truck is
moving again after a full stomp on the gas. Doesn't matter if it's in
eco or normal or sport or tow/haul mode. Slam the gas right to the floor
and just nothing happens for whole seconds. And in that time some other
car has come closer than I intended etc.
In manual, even with a much weaker engine, even with the same turbo lag,
I somehow never have this problem. I can always make it stop or go (or
at least start going) essentially immediately any time I want and I can
always put the vehicle where I want when I want.
So it's not a question of more hp or more torque but responsiveness for
both the throttle and the shifting, both when adding more gas and when
letting off gas. (braking always brakes immediately of course, but just
letting off the gas does not actually let off the gas right away, and
worse it's not consistent, sometimes it's way worse than other times so
you can't predict how it will behave from a given input at any given
time. Let off the gas and sometimes it will stop accelerating pretty
soon and then actually decelerate pretty soon, other times it may
actually keep actively accelerating for a bit before letting off.
"sport mode" has exactly the same lag and doesn't help with this at all.
It just pushes harder when it finally does start pushing, and that
sometimes actually makes it worse because then it becomes an
over-reaction and going too far.
tow/haul is slightly better.
I think it's partly that in a manual you make it shift into exactly
whatever gear you want exactly when you want right now, and partly that
in a manual you also sometimes don't shift at all but just change the
gas, and that has some effect immediately because it's already locked
into some gear and you are just changing the gas.
Does this make enough sense? I am not trying to say I want it to be a
manual, just trying to describe a certain kind of stop & go that
particularly drives me nuts in an automatic, and is there any sort of
transmission tune that helps make that less infuriating by just being
both more responsive to inputs and more consistent/predictable, even
though it's still auto?
Some of this is probably made worse by turbo lag because this vehicle
does have a turbo, but I have other cars with turbo and manual and I
just don't have this problem.
Thanks much.
