FWIW had known this limitation I probably would not have bought the Toyota mats.

Was doing some Fall cleaning on the inside and found a salt cache by the accelerator.

Vacuum didn't touch it. Soaking it with water will likely just send it deeper into the floor. Second winter will make it worse.

I probably won't fall through the floor during my ownership - none the less it is messy.

Otherwise my first year and 6500 miles has been good. Winter handling is good. It generally handles well locally and on the highway. The torque is great towing. Low range is the balls on the launching ramp.

Would like more sound deadening but it isn't terrible.

Back in the day Toyota floor mats were great. Thick as all hell and would take more thana decade to wear. When I bought a 2013 Rav4 the mats that came with it were like Chinese specials. A fraction of the quality. After a couple years I replaced them with something like weather techs. Now I don't even wait. If you live in the south and your 4Runner is a mall queen then stock is fine. Up north, where salt and slush is just a way of life in the winter replace them. But look for a mat that gets the best coverage around the gas pedal. Some of the cheaper Chinese ones I've seen don't protect the carpet on the side of the pedal or the foot rest where the clutch pedal would be. That just allows that area to get crud on the carpet.

I don't recall if they were included with the truck-probably not. They are heavy duty thick, I have no complaint there, it is the coverage.
That mess is after one winter of light use of the truck.

I have bought other types but they seem to turn a whacky brownish gray.

I ordered Weather Tech mats the week I bought my 4runner, just one of the things I swap out whenever I buy a new vehicle. Had Husky liners in my prior vehicle and like the WT a bit better, more rubbery/less plasticy so not as slick when wet or if the car wash guy decided to put armor all on them.
