Hello, im having trouble deciding if I should get a 2025 4runner in the off road premium trim or the limited trim ?

Im leaning heavily to the 2026 4runner trd off road premium hybrid, but my main concern in the whole "monthly exercising of the 4wd system i.e. 4h,4l

I dont have a 10mile straight road where I live and most is pavement or "high traction" surfaces im scared that if I get this trim ill end up breaking it cause I would have to turn on payment while in 4h or 4l, is it really going to break if I try this or is toyota just covering themselves from warranty claims ?

Does the 4runner limited trim have the same issue with driving on pavement while going through the different gears?

Or will it also bind up like the orp ?

Re: engaging 4h/l monthly, the same recommendation would apply to the limited and platinum. Even though they have FT4WD instead of 2Hi, they still have 4h/l too.

monthly is probably more than 99% of owners engage 4h/l, but doing it on occasion would be good

What would you choose if mist of your driving was on pavement, Limited Or ORP ?

I think it depends on your overall use pattern and desired features, even beyond whether or not it’s mostly pavement.

I personally am a big fan of FT4WD systems for my use pattern because they give you 4-wheel traction at all times and still have fully locked hi and lo options when you need them. Combined with the fact that I don’t need a rear locker or disconnecting sway bar at all, prefer painted body color accents over matte black, prefer the premium headlights, prefer real leather to synthetic, etc etc… the Limited is an absolutely perfect match for me.

But if I lived in a drier climate, only drove on well-maintained paved roads most of the time, and had a hobby of doing technical off roading and rock crawling, the calculus could be different.

I love my Limited, especially in the rain or wet conditions, the 4wd feels SO solid. Plus the interior is SO beautiful, especially in the brown leather trim.

Couple of things:

The original ride of the stock Limited was horrible, way to stiff even with the suspension set at comfort. Dealer set the tires at 45PSI on OEM tires. sigh.

- Immediately purchased new rims and 275/70/18 Terra Grapplers (SL Rated Tires, NOT E or LT) set at 33 psi and the ride is now fantastic.

- With the Limited you will not be able to swap out the OEM suspension for something else since it's electronic.

I purchased my Limited sight unseen since no dealers had any 4runners to even test drive. So I'm not sure if the off road premium trim rides any smoother.

BTW got the non-hybrid because I hated the look of the battery in the back of the cargo area and I don't need to tow anything. I got the tow package only because the electronic rear view mirror is so bad ass :)

If you are planning on seriously off roading I would go ORP. If you are just going on trails and mostly pavement I would go Limited.

Either choice you will be happy with.
