Good comparison, I haven't seen anything put together like this with the key advantages between the 4Runner and the competition.

Did anyone actual cross shop against any of these 3 vehicles? I tire kicked the Bronco but end of the day didn't want to deal with Ford reliability vs. Toyota's.

I drove that Jeep with the huge motor! It was not fun, felt really awkward, shifting was bad, braking was also bad, and corners at any speed was disappointing. So glad Iam a 4Runner owner.

I strongly considered the Bronco. I used to have a 1998 Ford Explorer, which I was very happy with (and had no problems). The Bronco is probably a bit more off-road capable, but in reality probably not much--especially if you know what you are doing. 4Runner is quieter, and I think a nicer vehicle to drive. Fuel economy, especially with the hybrid, is significantly better than the Bronco. Bronco is cool that you can remove roof panels and doors, but I figured I would rarely (if ever) use that feature. The rear door in the Bronco is less flexible--you have to open the bottom part first to open the window, and you do not get rain protection when open like the lift gate design. Spare tire on the back saves interior space, but makes it a lot more of a pain to deal with getting in the rear.

One thing I dislike in the 4Runner that really had me hesitating is the stupid way the back seats get out of the way--or don't. They can be rolled up behind the front seats, but that creates a large wall that obstructs most of the back doors as well as the rear ventilation (I did not get a model with a dual ventilation system--not sure if the rear ventilation is different with that). When the seats are flipped back down (but still folded) they are quite high. The hybrid battery raises the rear bed quite a bit--you get a bit of storage at the front and rear of that space, but I believe with the non-hybrid you get storage below (as well as the overall bed being lower). I have large dogs, and the 4Runner is definitely not as good for them as it is so high (but understandable, as a good off-road vehicle will be, by definition, higher).

I purchased one that happened to become available almost instantly that almost perfectly matched what I was looking for. It does not have the additional skid plates, but I can add those later. It also does not have the built-in brake controller which I would have liked (although it is possible I will not need it, in which case it will not matter). If found later that also adds a digital rear-view mirror which sounds great--but minor overall. Unfortunately I am told that brake controller package cannot be added later--and the manual says not to use a 3rd party controller! Not much choice if I do need one.

The 4Runner has better features by default (like all the newer safety features) that may be optional on the Bronco. Interestingly, the 4Runner was also less expensive, which I did not expect.

Overall I really like the 4Runner--I think neither would have been a bad choice.
