Nice, I guess I'll have to check it out. I saw someone recommend that in that group.

Moving down to DC area in a few months. Extremely new to overlanding and trails but would love to start. If you’re around I’d love to go out!

Have not been and this is not an endorsement, but found this one: https://chaosfabshop.com/chaos-road-park/
I sent a message to Chaos a few weeks back as I was planning a off road day but never heard back. Does look interesting. Please report back here if you give it a go.
I've done Peter's Mill and the much more interesting offshoot Walter's Gap in Geo Washington National Forest just east of I-81 near woodstock twice. Peter's mill is a level 3 easy on onX; Walter's gap is a medium 4. Peter's mill is fun but it was "easy" with my my TRD OR (both before and after larger wheels.) There is a side trek that I followed a line of jeeps up last time that is probably a 5 but is not explicitly marked that way on onX. I zoomed up the entry in 4LO (diff locked) after watching a jeep struggle. Got a chuckle
Those are close to DC and worth the trek.
I'm planning to head up to Rausch Creek Off-road park in PA east of Harrisburg on 13 December and then hit "Cidernalia" at the National Apple Museum in Biglerville PA on the way back. If anyone is interested in joining DM me. (My plans are very loose right now but leaving Vienna VA EARLY so can be to Biglerville and then back home at a reasonable hour after 4 or so hours on the trail at Rausch.)

Not really close but by far my most fun off road trip was Dick's Creek to Dark Hollow in the Cherokee National Forest in northern TN near Johnson City.

I completely missed the part about "groups" in the OP. @Rock Doc you might want to poke around the REI down there by 7 Corners/Bailey's area. I don't go down that way anymore (I'm in Loudoun), but I *think* there was a an off-road group loosely based around that area. YMMV, etc etc.

I'm local to the area, favorite trail is probably Canaan loop road in WV (about 3 hours away). I'd say it's slightly more difficult than Peter's Mill run but the scenery was much more interesting, and there were some nice short hikes to overlooks/waterfalls in the area. The trail can also be paired with Forest Road 18/Olson tower, as well as a pretty crazy water crossing I haven't attempted yet:

Been wanting to do Union Springs road to flagpole knob for a while, just would like to go with another vehicle.
